Ohio suspect TJ Lane faces juvenile murder charges

TJ Lane allegedly killed three fellow students and wounded two after he opened fire in the cafeteria of Chardon High School.

Trying Mr Lane as a juvenile would significantly reduce the amount of jail time he would face if convicted.

However, the county prosecutor has said he plans to try him on adult charges.

Juveniles convicted in Ohio generally do not stay in custody past the age of 21. However, a similar adult charge could see Mr Lane face life in prison.

Mr Lane was also charged with two counts of attempted aggravated murder and one count of assault. Prosecutor David Joyce says the victims were random and has described TJ Lane as "not well".

I'm surprised that they charged him as a juvenile even if it is changed later.

It isn't like a five year old pointing a live handgun at a friend and yelling "BANG!"

"Lane will likely be tried as an adult. An arraignment hearing is set for 3 p.m. March 6. Another hearing tentatively set for March 19 will determine whether there is probable cause to support the charges. If there is probable cause, Ohio law requires Lane's case to be transferred to adult criminal court.

Lane, however, will not face the death penalty because he is a minor."

(CBS/AP) CHARDON, Ohio - A longtime neighbor of the grandparents who helped raise Ohio school shooting suspect TJ Lane says a gun fitting the description of the one used in the rampage is missing from the grandfather's barn.

Carl Henderson, a 74-year-old friend and neighbor of Lane's grandparents, says the gun was kept in the barn and wasn't noticed missing until after Monday's deadly shootings.

Henderson, who's a former police officer and ex-Geauga County sheriff, says Lane's grandfather has told him he believes it is the same gun.

Ohio of course does not have any law requiring safe storage.
