WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. — A measure to ban the use of foreign laws in domestic courtrooms is progressing in Florida's statehouse, one of dozens of similar efforts across the country that critics call an unwarranted campaign driven by fear of Muslims.

Forty such bills are being pursued in 24 states, according to a tally by the National Conference of State Legislatures, a movement backers say is a response to a glaring hole in legal protections for Americans. Opponents say the bills simply address a made-up threat and could threaten agreements made under Jewish or other religious law.

"There have been all sorts of wild accusations about what this bill does," said Sen. Alan Hays, R-Umatilla, who sponsored the Senate bill in Florida. "This is very clear, very simple: In American courts we need American laws and no other."

The Florida measure passed the House on Thursday 92-24. It awaits a full vote in the Senate.

I am really glad to see this...

Obviously the great Governor Rick Scott and the great Florida Republican Party has fixed all of Florida's problems, so now they can turn their attention to stupidity like anti-Sharia laws. (I refuse to use the sarcasm tag; hopefully my intent was clear.)

What y'all are not realizing is this law ALSO prevents the enforcement of United Nations treaties and other international treaties within the State of Florida, including things like international maritime law--which, considering that Florida has the second-longest coastline of any state, is important there.

11. I find it (almost) amusing

that many of the people who scaremonger about Shariah law want Biblical Law, which is very similar.

This could easily backfire on them if secularists congratulate them for strengthening the wall between church and state.

I had someone say something on my Facebook page about banning Shariah Law. I promptly replied that it was not necessary since our laws are based on common law and our constitution. The entire thing is scare tactics.

The 1st Amendment already has "this problem" covered.

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting

In other words government be it local or state or national including the courts
can not be in the "God business" in any way shape or form. Remember the
wing nut judge in Alabama (?) who was told he could not have his 10 commandments
thing- a-bob in his court room?

Florida has a much bigger problem with un-American snakes then Sharia with law
taking over in the state's courts. And yes I agree w/ the o.p. they have gone crazy.

17. US law is based upon "foreign" law. Always has been.

In the US Supreme Court building South Wall Frieze includes figures of lawgivers from the ancient world and includes Menes, Hammurabi, Moses, Solomon, Lycurgus, Solon, Draco, Confucius, and Augustus. The North Wall Frieze shows lawgivers from the Middle Ages on and includes representations of Justinian, Muhammad, Charlemagne, John of England, Louis IX of France, Hugo Grotius, Sir William Blackstone, John Marshall, and Napoleon. Only one of those 18 people is an American, and he's almost near the end of the sequence.
