Now Wal-Mart is apparently trying to become a neighborhood grocery store? Yeah, right.

(14,255 posts)No, they are not, not for a lot of things. And they could only dream of having the selection that Publix has.
Or the clean stores. Or the specialty foods. Or the bakery. Or the fried chicken.
Wal-Mart took over an (over-priced) Albertson's that closed, across the street from Publix, in a fairly upper middle class area..
Be interesting to see how long they last.

(7,429 posts)They have a special ad insert each week that shows you all of the stuff you could buy at Publix and the same items at WalMart and you will save money at Publix not WalMart. I love it.
Oh and yes Publix is a much better store in every way possible. The Deli, the bakery, the milk (WalMart's milk is dreadful), the customer service. Try finding someone at WalMart. Can't do it. Publix is right there to help you when you walk into the store. Love it!!

(23,156 posts)Since I haven't been in a WalMart in over a decade, I can't comment on selection, cleanliness, etc that you mentioned in your post, but my local Albertson's has a good selection and so on. And there are also other stores here -- Whole Foods, Sprouts, and Smith's -- for whatever I can't find at the other.
Choice is good. WalMart wants to eliminate any possibility of real choice.
If I were ever to move a hundred miles from the nearest decent-sized city, I'd scout out the grocery store options ahead of time. I still wouldn't go to a WalMart myself.

Not interested.

(30,947 posts)I rarely go there. Last time I went there was a couple of years ago because I had an out-of-town friend visiting and she wanted to go to WalMart. For groceries, I prefer my local Kroger.

(4,373 posts)so probably just moving into your area? Meh, the prices aren't so low and they are too big to be convenient.

(7,720 posts)'neighborhood Walmart' stores in Arizona. It's just a Walmart that is about 1/4 the size of a Walmart Super Center.
Edit to add: I think the merchandise is only what you would find in a grocery store.

(50,130 posts)It went in three doors away from an existing, established Grocery Outlet. Too bad that planning couldn't keep that from happening.
I went inside the place. Ugh. It is HUGE, but it has no soul. And it wasn't any cheaper than the Kroger a mile away. I did notice many many aisle of freezer meals. So I guess that must be the focus.
