Why, they asked, did the GOP seem so in the thrall of its most extremist wing? The donors, banker types who occupy the upper reaches of Wall Streets towers, couldnt understand why the Republican Partytheir partyseemed close to threatening the nation with a government shutdown, never mind a default if the debt ceiling isnt raised later this month.
Listen, Walden said, according to several people present. We have to do this because of the Tea Party. If we dont, these guys are going to get primaried and they are going to lose their primary.
Walden asked how many of those seated around the table were precinct captains. These were money men, though, not the types to spend night after night knocking on doors and slipping palm cards into mailboxes.
A lot of the people there didnt even know what a precinct captain was, said one attendee.
Not a single hand went up.

Seems to me that no one is driving the republican train as runs out of track because of the cliff that's just ahead.

(129,440 posts)Doubling-down on the crazy. When you have Rancid up there on teevee like a cheap low-level gangster exclaiming "Who runs the House? Who runs the House?" as if that is the entire government, and then whines about "You mean you want us to just lay down and capitulate?"... it's like a Todd Aiken "the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down" moment.

We are finding a marvelous way to grab defeat from the jaws of victory, said Fred Zeidman, a Houston-based businessman who was a major donor to both of George W. Bushs presidential campaigns. The way we are handling this has been a mistake from the beginning. I think we misread where the country was.

I like it. When it hits them in the donor list, that is when we'll get some traction.
