Capitol Hill Shooting Update: Miriam Carey, 34, Dental Hygienist suffered from Mental Illness

Miriam Carey, 34, of 114 Woodside Green drove her black Infiniti sedan onto a driveway leading to the White House, over a set of lowered barricades. When Carey couldn't get through a second barrier, she spun the car in the opposite direction, flipping a Secret Service officer over the hood of the car as she sped away, said B.J. Campbell, a tourist from Portland, Ore.

Carey worked as a dental hygienist and according to a local law enforcement official, she suffered from mental illness.

Carey's car at one point had been surrounded by police cars and she managed to escape, careening around a traffic circle and past the north side of the Capitol. Video shot by a TV camerman showed police pointing firearms at her car before she rammed a Secret Service vehicle and continued driving. Lanier said police shot and killed her a block northeast of the historic building.

One Secret Service member and a 23-year veteran of the Capitol Police were injured. Officials said they are in good condition and expected to recover.

Police shot and killed Carey just outside the Hart Senate Office Building, where many senators have their offices. Dine said an officer took the child from the car to a hospital. She is in good condition under protective custody, officials said.

Stamford police and FBI agents converged on the scene. Two plain clothes officers escorted a woman into the building and emerged a short time later, the woman carrying a small white dog.

cared for in the arms of the Capitol Police and the video of her driving erratically seemed to say there was something very wrong there. I don't fault Capitol Police or SS...because How were they to know her background. And, they seemed to hold off until she seemed to be a threat they couldn't ignore.

Who knows...more will come out....but, on the face of the latest info...it does sound very sad that whatever drove her to this was some sort of mental breakdown.

Goodness knows....we are living in trying times where we all are very stressed. Gotta be hard on those of us who are fragile to begin with.

But...still...so much we don't know. But, if this is true I pray for her daughter and glad neighbor or relative was able to take their little dog out of the place they lived. That may be the comfort to the little child that's been left behind in this horrendous situation in the future.

We still don't know a lot. But, we have more pieces to fill in the picture than we did before. And that she had a history of mental illness according to this article from her Home Town newspaper.

are challenged by all the shit flying loose these days. Excuse my language...but, there's been much that has been challenging for the past two decades and that any of us who are older than 30 can keep on trucking is amazing... And then there's the under 30 who don't know that things were better once than they are these days suffering with job losses, college debts or low/no wage jobs and just trying to hang on.

It's enough to make even what we think of as the sane become "challenged." I hate to think of those who suffer from Mental Difficulties trying to find some comfort. Meds can't heal it all. There needs to be a "supportive community" and those days of that are pretty much long gone for most of us at any age with the challenging changes in our society where we are split off from family/friends by job, location, politics and lifestyle challenges.

It's an incredibly rough time to live in.

and the crime since they cannot simply blame an object's existence as the cause.

Hopefully new laws will come up to help prevent people from having cars that shouldn't so such things can be prevented in the future. I, for one, would feel better if we banned 6 cylinder and above cars (except for big companies and the government). Do soccer moms really need such big vehicles? Get rid of fully automatic cars, replace with all standard. And lord knows some paint jobs on cars or ones with lifts and such look damn scary, if we could at least not allow cars to look that way I wouldn't feel so weird when I see one at the park or pulled into star bucks.....

from here. I saw the ages and it was mixed with some in late 60's into early 70's so assume they were career people. Although it was reported that some were contractors ...so maybe that was what turned people off thinking "they got what they deserved" or something. But, there wasn't enough attention...as you said...it died off.

Can't help but conclude race has something to do with it. That shooter wasn't white, so it didn't fit the narrative. Same with today's events. When reality didn't fit that narrative, and couldn't be made to fit that narrative, interest faded. Thoughtful threads such as yours being the exception.
