House GOPer: 'I Need My Paycheck' During Shutdown

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) told a local television station that she would not be deferring her pay during the government shutdown, as some other members have done.

"I need my paycheck. That's the bottom line," Ellmers told WTVD in Raleigh, N.C. "I understand that there may be some other members who are deferring their paychecks, and I think that's admirable. I'm not in that position."

According to Ellmers's official website, she was a registered nurse for 21 years before being elected to Congress. Her husband Brent, the website says, is a general surgeon.

(See brief video of the local news story about it here: http://talkingpointsmemo.com/livewire/house-goper-i-need-my-paycheck).

Btw, there's also a Democrat featured in the video as 'needing his paycheck'. What makes the Republican's statement so disturbing is that she is currently on board with her 'Con Party to stop other people from getting their paychecks. Just as disgusting is her fear of losing her better-than-average financial status. Her husband is a general surgeon; the government workers' salaries are much lower than her husband's alone.

There's a smart way to handle this. Rather than saying you NEED your paycheck, say that you intend to keep your paycheck and you plan to support backpay for everyone who was furloughed.

Then again, if my district had existed in '08, it would have gone for the president. His competition is week, but it still has a shot.

This is just sad. And she's not the only one.

That cost us 10 grand in material (that we purchased as needed), we tried to get our contracted payment after completion so we could all be paid and cover the materials fronted.

They were planning a trip to Ireland so the lawyer husband said to get paid we would have to take him to court and he would tie it up as long as it took. He offered the option of paying us a third so we would go away, a third didn't even cover the materials we bought. He rationalized it like all these "middle class" people do and actually said, "We work hard for our money". The 100 grand and up crowd are typically like that and seldom like to pay for work they order. I guess the crew of craftsmen that worked 12 hours a day until it was finished according to their satisfaction did not "work hard for their money" like them. That goes for government workers as well I suppose. I personally turned 237 custom spindles after milling and gluing up the stock, I guess my work didn't count as work even tho they sure as hell didn't have the skill and training to do it. Go figure.

They play poor and claim to work harder than everyone else, even tho they work less and make 4 or 5 times what the people they screw over make.

The more people have, the more dishonest and greedy they are. I have never had trouble getting paid by people that work for a living and make regular wages. Just the cul de sac and richer crowd. Ironically the people I was talking about were "liberal" fanatical supporters of Bill Clinton, the right wing selfish creeps are in both parties, that is why the Third way site is so popular among the limo liberals that are financially in the top 10% and above. They are like their Republican soul mates but don't hate women and gay ppl as much, economically they are all selfish assholes with class superiority complexes, the fascist Birchers in the Republican party are just plain crazy, I guess we are blessed they have not yet been among the conservatives that have taken over our party.

You can't trust any of them because they see blue collar and poor as lazy scum as compared to their "work hard" ethics.

She needs HER paycheck because she "works hard for her money" and the grunts in government just plain to not compare to their own special needs that they would just die without.

From the Raleigh News-Observer: Ellmers won't give back pay but may defer next month's check

Republican U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers said Friday she would decline her $174,000 congressional salary amid the federal government shutdown, reversing course after facing intense pressure. Ellmers sent a letter to House officials asking for her pay to be withheld, saying in a statement she would “stand with all federal workers.”

Two days earlier, the Dunn lawmaker refused to decline her paycheck like many of her Republican and Democratic colleagues during the shutdown, telling a Raleigh TV station, “I need my paycheck. That is the bottom line.”

The remark generated a firestorm and calls of hypocrisy given that 800,000 federal workers are being furloughed without pay because of the budget impasse in Congress.

Ellmers begin backtracking Friday morning in a CNN interview just before 10 a.m. She said her October paycheck was in her bank account when the shutdown took effect, Oct. 1, suggesting she couldn’t do anything about it. But if the shutdown continued, Ellmers said she will have another option to defer in November. “I may do it at that point,” she told CNN.

Glad to know that public shaming still has some impact.
