It's easy. The question is: why doesn't he do it?

But I still don't fully understand the psychology.

My hope hinges on another theory: he's letting the screamin' meanies have their party over the government shutdown for a couple of weeks so he can come back and say: okay boys, you've had your fun, now we have to raise the debt ceiling. Closing the government is bad, but only minorly so when compared to breaching the debt ceiling and throwing the world economy into chaos.

and I see a dozen or so DUers heads implode, I see my political enemies grabbing their heads in pain, I see the repubs I've fought toe to toe head for their foxholes a la Frank Burns in the TV version of MASH, and I see the teabaggers who don't know me head for their survivalist bunkers.

I can't get beyond those images to make a reasoned response.
