You've gotta be kidding me: GOP Member Floats Ending Sequester In Exchange For SS and Medicare cuts

What the hell kind of compromise is that? Hey Dems, we'll get rid of those sequester cuts you hate and just cut Social Security and Medicare.

That's like saying, instead of burning your whole house down, I'll just burn a few rooms and if you don't accept this deal, the entire economy will be destroyed. Oh, and don't even think about asking for additional revenue.

Capisce?

GOP Member Floats Ending Sequester In Exchange For Entitlement Changes
Posted: 10/03/2013 7:41 pm EDT | Updated: 10/04/2013 12:07 am EDT

WASHINGTON -- Despite the tough rhetoric from President Barack Obama and Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) about respective refusals to negotiate, there is talk that a way out of the government shutdown and debt ceiling deadline could include a bargain of sorts -- even if it isn't exactly grand.

One Republican lawmaker walked a group of reporters through how this might happen on Thursday afternoon, and said that he thinks a deal will be reached by the Oct. 17 deadline to raise the debt ceiling.

"I think we'll avoid default. I think we'll stumble toward a larger deal that will continue to narrow the deficit," said the lawmaker. "I don't think it will be as grand as the grand bargain."

In short, the GOP member, who spoke on the condition he not be quoted by name in order to speak more frankly, said during an hour talk that members of his party might be willing to vote to end some or all of the sequester, in exchange for changes to Social Security and Medicare.

Hmm. How to gin up Obama hate once people discover the facts on ACA. Even those who don't make out quite as well have to see that Obama fixed something that was a disaster in spite of huge opposition. It might even dawn on them to vote the Republicans out of the house this time.

ACA repeal is a trial run! If the budget impasse can somehow be leveraged into turining back an enacted law like the ACA, then the debt ceiling could acheive the bircher dream of cutting/ending Social Security.

whether the GOP is really at fault for this stalemate or whether this is a type of kabuki theater designed to force austerity onto the American people.

Since both sides have proposed the same thing then disagreement is really only over the details.

Once you start playing the multidimensional chess thing the dimensions never stop multiplying, it's turtles all the way down.

I don't necessarily think Obama's actual intentions are to cut SS but his actions and words can sometimes be taken that way, so many things depend on point of view. As someone on SS Bowles and Simpson make me uneasy at best and downright alarmed when it sounds like Obama agrees with them.

Having the individual mandate for private insurance as the crown jewel of Obama's health care plan after he mocked the concept during the campaign doesn't make me more likely to take his words at absolute face value.

you extort something.

Nothing is the most generous deal that can safely be offered because anything else is payoff for these tactics. "Compromise" under such circumstances is irresponsible no matter what hostage is threatened.

These bullies should have been fought to the bitter end from the jump because you can deal with delusional radical regressives.

"Adults in the room" my ass. Real adults don't allow the children to kill the dog, put grandma in the hospital, and burn down the house while they whine and try to strike bargains watching it all happen

Coddling these loons is shit stewardship, you don't risk the well being of the people on windmill tilting at partnership with the remenants of the Birch Society and the mob of Branch Leviticans for show and/or some silly ass Barney the Dinosaur purple ideology.
