I have been at DU for ten years and in those years I have donated to campaigns in numerous states. I have supported recalls and vote recounts and people in places far away from Central Texas. I did this in an attempt to help our country elect people who believe in women, men and children over corporations. Today I am asking you to step up and help me and millions of Texans reclaim our state from the crazies. It will take lots of money and dedication, but it can be done. Here is the website: http://www.wendydavistexas.com/
Thanks to you all.

(2,674 posts)She is just what Texas Democrats need, a good candidate on the ticket. With her at the top of the state ballot, it will help all the way down the line for other Dem candidates. Maybe we'll get a Castro twin in, now that would be the greatest!
Turning Texas blue is going to take a lot of votes, the major cities (Dallas, Houston, Austin, San Antonio, El Paso) plus the Valley are Democratic. The suburbs surrounding the cities are Rep. Then Texas has so damn many rural counties and they are all repub. Plus Texas always has low voter turn out.
The untouched treasure for Democrats are the Hispanics who vote in low numbers in Texas. That is where the GOTV should be directed and with a good batch of candidates, the job will be easier.

(94,571 posts)...think hard about your contribution, and what it means about where you're NOT contributing.
The sad reality is that the Texas Democratic Party is weak, and this race is rated as "SOLID REPUBLICAN". I'd love to see her win, and in 4 years, Democratic strength in Texas may be stronger. But in the meantime, your contribution to Wendy David is a contribution not made to defeat Scott Walker, Rick Scott, John Kasich, Tom Corbett or Rick Snyder, all of which are equally right wing, and all of which are vulnerable.

(16,646 posts)That's a heck of a prediction in a race that is a long way out, and in a state where things are changing fast. I gave to the Walker recall campaign, and that was predicted by the national party to be a loser. Should I not have contributed?
brooklynite
(94,571 posts)...and I don't rely on the Party's prognostications to guide my decisions. The recall election was never seen as a likely success by Cook, Rothenberg or Sabato, and none of them disagree that that, as things stand now, this is a lock for the Republicans. Could things change? Certainly, but it would require a dynamic change that I don't see happening at this point.
As a simple measure, I would hold off until (and if) the race changes to "Likely Republican". That would indicate some forward momentum that I'm not currently seeing.

(37,748 posts)She has more support than a mere cursory glance allows, and snap, local news polls done over the past 24 hours show her ahead in the five I've seen so far... three of them had her leading by double digits over Abbot, two others she was ahead by single digits, and only one had her behind... by four point.
That's a damnably good start, and I'd imagine that anyone who tells us she has no chance is either unaware of local TX politics, or pretends to on the shoulders of an agenda.

(22,298 posts)It is because national Dems, like you, do nothing but give us doom & gloom, treat us like dirt, call us stupid, bash Texas at any opportunity, YET come to us hat in hand asking for money for YOUR candidates & YOUR issues!
SCREW THAT! Texas is NOT your ATM anymore. We have long sent money & support to other states & candidates, who promise to help us when it's our "turn."
Well, it's our turn now, & where are all those panhandlers? Standing around with their hands in their pockets saying they can't/won't donate because we're "weak."
brooklynite
(94,571 posts)Well, I suppose I am in that I give financial support to competitive candidates nationwide. But how exactly do - I - treat you like dirt? By trying to separate fantasy from reality? I have no official status, so if you've been getting the runaround from Party officials, you should take it up with them. I'm just someone with the financial resources to support candidates where it will make a difference, NOT where it will make me feel good for sticking up for a policy that won't get implemented because the candidate is destined to lose. I don't have unlimited resources, and if I did the Federal Govt doesn't let me spend as much as I want. So I perform triage. It's not pleasant (especially when I have to say no in person), but it's necessary.
Reminder - I've said before that Wendy should run...just not now. if she calls me (not out of the realm of possibility) and can offer a convincing path to victory, I'll be happy to consider it. Until then, my cash is going to the races where it can make a difference.

(26,582 posts)Texas, you just wait, maybe the next election we can help you out.
It takes a lot of money to run here. They're saying Greg Abbot will have $40M. That's $40-MILLION to spend.
I'm so tired of being told to help out these dems in other states, and when Texas asks for help we're told "too bad, so sad, you are a republican state".
So, thanks, but no thanks. I will spend my money right here in Texas, trying to turn it blue instead of helping all those other dems that other people deem more worthy.

(145,242 posts)I remember the 2002 campaign very well. Kirk Watson is a classmate and was running for attorney general. In 2002, Rove and company was still using Sept. 11 to generate votes for the GOP. Remember, Saxby Chambliss was able to defeat a true war hero by claiming that the Democrat was not strong on defense. Rove was pushing a number of attacks using Sept. 11 to justify people not changing course.
In Texas, Sanchez was accused or linked to money laundering and/or drugs due to the fact that he owned a bank. The GOP was very good at stoking both racial resentment/fears and using the fact that Sanchez was from a border county to imply that he was involved in drugs. There were no merit to these rumors but that did not matter. Perry ran a very dirty campaign and was able to get by with it.
I do not think that the same tactics will work this time. Abbott has a habit of stepping into messes and some of his or his supporters statements such as "retard barbie", "abortion barbie" and the claim that as a woman Senator Davis is too stupid to be governor can be used to motivate the woman vote. Women are a majority of the voters in Texas and I think that Senator Davis will be able to build on Abbott's stupidity to build up a gender gap.

(70,695 posts)SANCHEZ was a non-typical Hispanic, was a crony of Shrub's, running as a Dem on the gambit that Mexican-Americans would turn out to VOTE (as opposed to how they DON'T VOTE, except for KENNEDYs, LBJ, & CLINTON) just because of his ethnicity, plus his $30M.
The reliable VOTING block in TX is the elderly White wingnuts, who could use their racism on SANCHEZ despite his being fairly much one of their own errand boys. In DAVIS's case, they can substitute her being a WOMAN instead of the Hispanic ethnicity to attack, plus her pro-Choice activism. Yeah, perhaps ABBOTT's stepping on his own anatomy might be a plus.
I'm just saying that the wingnuts will not be at a loss to find tactics to use specifically tailored for her.

(9,463 posts)Serious question...
Based on her filibuster? Or just that she's a Democrat?
What are her accomplishments and/or qualifications to run a state as large as my Texas?
Did anyone even know who Wendy Davis was before her famous filibuster?
