I'm sure there will be objections to casting this in racial terms, and clearly the demographics I'm referring to aren't representative of white people in general, but a look at the districts that the "wacko bird suicide caucus" members are from, is most enlightening.
These (mostly) guys are from mostly white districts with lots of evangelicals. Most, but not all are from the South. there's a map at the link.
<snip>
Most of the members of the suicide caucus have districts very similar to Meadowss. While the most salient demographic fact about America is that it is becoming more diverse, Republican districts actually became less diverse in 2012. According to figures compiled by The Cook Political Reports David Wasserman, a leading expert on House demographics who provided me with most of the raw data Ive used here, the average House Republican district became two percentage points more white in 2012.
The members of the suicide caucus live in a different America from the one that most political commentators describe when talking about how the country is transforming. The average suicide-caucus district is seventy-five per cent white, while the average House district is sixty-three per cent white. Latinos make up an average of nine per cent of suicide-district residents, while the over-all average is seventeen per cent. The districts also have slightly lower levels of education (twenty-five per cent of the population in suicide districts have college degrees, while that number is twenty-nine per cent for the average district).
The members themselves represent this lack of diversity. Seventy-six of the members who signed the Meadows letter are male. Seventy-nine of them are white.
<snip>
In short, these eighty members represent an America where the population is getting whiter, where there are few major cities, where Obama lost the last election in a landslide, and where the Republican Party is becoming more dominant and more popular. Meanwhile, in national politics, each of these trends is actually reversed.

(16,846 posts)trends are opposite of those in the rest of the country, are being allowed to shut down the government. Upside-down Land is holding the country hostage. They need to be shown who is really in charge. There should be absolutely no deals with these brats.

(16,846 posts)He's in his second or third term right now. He unseated Gene Taylor, who was a ten-term blue dog. Republicans here are talking about trying to get Taylor to run against him next year. Taylor's conservative, but he wouldn't have joined those pigs and shut down the government like Palazzo did.

(114,904 posts)in any case, vermont is an anomaly in so very many ways. don't ask me why. I knew this place was weird different from border to border the first time I stepped foot in the state when I was kid.
but as I pointed out, it's obviously not all white folks. It's a certain demographic- as can be discerned from the facts in the article and the map illustrating it.

(84,711 posts)It's been a disaster. We have the ACLU fighting it in our state. Rigging a voting district to include only areas of White Republican Voters is discrimination.

(7,947 posts)People either get to vote for who they want to vote for, for whatever reasons they wish to vote for that person, or why bother having elections? Should people be shamed into voting in the good way?

(114,904 posts)try reading about them. these are people who want a country that is governed by the bible. no, that's not an exaggeration. they are people who would prosecute women for having an abortion. no, that's not an exaggeration. they are people on a crusade to end medicare and social security and the social safety net including food stamps. no, that's not an exaggeration. they are people.... do I really have to continue?
Yeah, the people that voted for these vile, dangerous men (only three women) damn well did vote badly.
Fucking duh.

(7,947 posts)Short of forcing them to vote the good or right way, they're exercising their right to vote how they see fit.
Force 300,000,000+ people to live together, and there's going to be some conflicting ideas.
cali
(114,904 posts)I most decidedly did NOT make.
and this isn't about conflicting ideas as anyone with the most rudimentary grasp of the current shutdown situation and those behind it, knows.
