Statement by the Press Secretary on Cancellation of the Presidents Trip to Asia
Due to the government shut-down, President Obamas travel to Indonesia and Brunei has been cancelled. The President made this decision based on the difficulty in moving forward with foreign travel in the face of a shutdown, and his determination to continue pressing his case that Republicans should immediately allow a vote to reopen the government. Secretary Kerry will lead delegations to both countries in place of the President.
The cancellation of this trip is another consequence of the House Republicans forcing a shutdown of the government. This completely avoidable shutdown is setting back our ability to create jobs through promotion of U.S. exports and advance U.S. leadership and interests in the largest emerging region in the world. The President looks forward to continuing his work with our allies and partners in the Asia-Pacific and to returning to the region at a later date.

(14,255 posts)The TPP, so far, looks like a giant corporate coup that has not much to do with trade.

(11,804 posts)Corporations want trade to be normalized and predictable. They want to be the ones making the laws - one of the risks in trading in a foreign country is that that country may enact policies that conflict with that companies goals. Everything from instituting environmental regulations or strengthening worker safety standards, up to nationalizing natural resources and seizing assets. Corporations do not want to run the risk of the rules changing and so want TPP as a means of ensuring that they don't change.
Now TPP is a huge overreach in this department; it seems to have the effect of giving large corporations veto power over a nations right to govern itself. And it will be used to shut down environmental legislation and worker rights. But they are doing that so that they can trade more productively.

Really? It is okay to run roughshod over any environmental regulation in the world so as to make a profit? Okay that this overrides sovereign laws? Has the Democratic party actually become the Corporate Party?
"Huge overreach"? And that's okay? Okay to sneakily create this and rush it into law?
"Seems to have the effect"? It does have the effect.
Is this the long-awaited defense of the TPP? Saying it is okay for our corporations to have sway over foreign countries and for foreign corporations to hold sway over us? Good-bye to pesky environmental regulations? Say good-bye to what sparse food inspections and laws we have now? All for corporate profit?

(11,804 posts)I'm not trying to defend the TPP. Oh wait - i did say that didn't I? Right in my title? Did you miss that?
If it was ok with me -why would I be pointing out the problems with it?

(14,255 posts)according to those who have seen parts of it, have nothing to do with trade.
This thing will touch everything, looks like.
I guess if you believe that all of life boils down to trade, then yeah.
And thanks for responding, we need to keep this front and center.
The ACA does not excuse the TPP. Nor does DOMA, DADT, or anything else.

and the local people were quite disappointed to hear that Obama had to cancel his visit. Everyone here loves Obama! It's the first word out of their mouths when they ask and find out I'm from the US.
