The lack of open public outrage over the shutdown makes one wonder if Americans really care if public servants get paid. The mantra that government workers live high off the hog with good pensions they don't deserve may be a factor in the silence of the public. The RW still attacks them daily for being worthless and not needed.
Most GOPPERS I know seem to think that government workers are getting what they deserve. Are not particularly sympathetic. Yet many of these same workers are Republicans. Now we have GOP Congressional Reps challenging workers shutting down sites for doing a job they are required to do without pay. And these same Reps voted not to pay them. And they are being demonized them as the enemy.
The police protecting the government are not getting paid. Now the GOP wants to pick and choose to pay only certain people for their political advantage and won't end the shut down.
In the FDR era the GOP would be on the run and overwhelmingly voted out. Now the chief perpetrators will probably be rewarded for their efforts. We are in a new age of unreality.

(10,602 posts)I asked a couple employees how they liked Gov. Brown while touring an old estate that was now a state park. This old bigoted bastard said he did not like him because he was a Democrat and he was a Republican. I did not say anything. But I was disgusted. The GOP is trying to take their pensions and trash them.

(25,171 posts)And based on yesterday, it's safe to say some members of Congress have no idea either.
It's really sad to realize there are so many dumb Uhmurikans walking amongst us.

(1,508 posts)This has been a long forty year march for these guys and the endgame is near. They have managed, through buying up all the media, to convince a large portion of the People to be against their own self interest. To be rabidly against their own self interest. And it's very cleverly done, by owning all the media they can make issues that as little as 5% of the public support seem like a 50/50 split or even a majority in their favor. This is why people that listen to hate radio and Fox News are so shocked when things don't go their way. They think everyone thinks like they do and because they just parrot the talking points over and over they manage to sway non political people to their viewpoint.
From an impartial standpoint what they do is brilliant as far as advancing their cause. They're ruthless and determined to get their way. And we'll never fight the way they do because we're decent and that's why this country is lost.
Believing that because you're right and honest you'll prevail is a nice sentiment but the truth is that nice guys finish last.

(60,010 posts)Just as they did after all other shutdowns.
here:
House Majority Leader Eric Cantors (R-Va.) office announced the House would remain in session to vote on new legislation that is critical to government operations.
One of the bills will deal with back pay for federal workers on furloughs and is likely to pass with support from both parties.

(39,215 posts)let me tell you what has happened since the shut down. The families with WIC are losing about $115 a month on this. They care. The veterans who are waiting for decisions from the VA now have a longer wait. They care. The member who is applying for Social Security is going to have to wait. He cares.
What I am saying is that this will hit individuals and their families and friends as well as the businesses that are trying to sell them things. The longer it lasts the more people are going to be hurt and angrier than they have ever been before.
The rethugs are standing around with their heads in the stand. What they are going to get in the end is kicked in the butt.

(4,238 posts)That's exactly the word I used in a FB rant (attached to the video of that vile POS Stuart Varney saying he wanted to "punish" federal workers by not only denying them their pay, but preventing them from receiving any back pay.) A teabagger relative jumped in to agree with Varney, and flat out said that government employees are "lazy" who have been living large off taxpayers, while those in the private sector were feeling the pinch of the economy. It was utterly insane. He was quickly put to shame by me and everyone else, but that is truly what these assholes believe. No sympathy whatsoever.
