I have known these people personally for many years. I am sure they voted for Romney. And son just joined a fundy church. He and his wife are unemployed. He can barely work and is looking for job. And his car was hit by a bus when in his early 20's and has a lot of metal parts in his body. And they hate unions.
Without the safety net they would be totally up a creek. I am sure their son who is around 30 really is unemployable and he has 3 kids. He has been depending on the charity of the medical community to treat his MS which looks like it is advancing.
He may not qualify for the ACA or Medicaid because he got a settlement from his crash, but not enough to live on or pay his mortgage.
And I know other GOPPERS who depend on the safety net yet hate socialism and Democrats.
I just do not understand how anyone can be so mentally disconnected.

(31,823 posts)That they simple don't believe the 'rhetoric' is talking about them. Since Reagan - there has been a carefully craft 'visual' as well as specific highly developed dog whistles and part of that brainwashing includes - "But we aren't talking about you. YOU (doesn't match the image and can't really 'hear' the dog whistle) - you - EARNED it.
They don't see themselves as weak or the 'other'.

(2,795 posts)One family has a child that was born with severe physical disabilities. The dad is involved in all kinds of groups that fight to get funding for kids and adults with disabilities. His son receives services from the state. And this man is the biggest critic of Obama and govt. Yet he doesn't see that if the repubs had their way, there would nothing provided for his son. I think many rethugs view people with disabilities as surplus population - and if they show any care for them at all, it's because it makes them look caring and buys them votes. And it works with this man I know. But he's entitled though he thinks no one else is.

(2,480 posts)It was so bad during the election that I finally un-friended her.
Both work for the state of Texas because they are educators at a public school and public university.
One of their kids has severe learning disabilities. He has state provided care during the day. She can't be alone with him, so if the husband is not around, a care-giver has to be there.
She did have issues growing up, that we didn't know about - preacher's kid. Crazy family. Hoarder for a mom. Parents divorced.
But ever since she told us in high school that she would never take a typing class (1970s) because we would be the ones doing the typing for her - ugh - no sympathy from me. LOL
That is the attitude that her father built in her. And then when he was divorced his church kicked him out and he was a clerk at a hardware store. So much for that.
She would rant on and on for hours on Facebook and then complain she didn't have time for her job or kids. Also spent massive amounts of time playing Farmville.

(68,918 posts)And that's it. Think of the babies... and the wrath of God...vote for those who don't have your best interests at heart.
That's how one becomes mentally disconnected. And the Republicans prey on that blind idiocy.
