This one doesn't look like a Katrina but it still looks like it could bring excessive rain and wind to an area that is still recovering from that massive 2005 Hurricane.

(16,846 posts)I can't decide whether I should stay here in my apartment or go to my parents' house over in Gulfport. I get around on my scooter and I don't want to leave it outside in the weather, so I could put it in their garage over there. I'd really rather stay here though, so I'm looking for somewhere here in Biloxi where I can stash the scooter. But that's the only thing I've got to worry about, so I'll be fine.

(16,846 posts)Hopefully the storm will pass on through and I won't have to stay up there for long.

(60,010 posts)You know about those storm surges, living where you do.
This storm is going to dump a LOT of water, if nothing else.
You don't want to be cut off by flooded streets, and going thru power outages alone is no fun.
I have learned that "after storm" comfort is pretty important.

(95,337 posts)I would go someplace safe.
That storm looks to be straddling the LA/MS border which means Biloxi could get hit big. And if your scooter gets damaged it may be weeks or month until you get insurance to replace it.
Better to be safe than sorry.

(32,060 posts)we were in an apartment when the Katrina/Rita storms hit the coast years ago (here in Houston). Inland Houston is more than 50 miles from Galveston but the apartment buildings are often shoddily built. We stayed with friends in Dallas for a few days instead.

(9,474 posts)ATM's will not be working if power goes out. I found out the hard way during Hurricane Hugo. Now, even though I'm living in the mountains of Va., I have an emergency bug out bag, cash on hand, emergency supplies for stay at home, full tank of gas. Hugo taught me a lot of lessons about being prepared for emergencies. Good luck and stay safe.

(32,060 posts)peanut butter w/crackers - that sort of thing.
If you don't have books grab a few now - or from the library on the way to your parents.
It can take awhile for the power to come back on.

(5,810 posts)It's a little unnerving for us to not be home to do pre-storm preparations. We have a camper stored at a KOA near home. We are usually home to take care of these kinds of things. Glad to note that the storm is not holding together very well to intensify. We went thought Ivan in 2004 and do not wish to repeat that experience.
