The shutdown politics are good for us, but not awesome
This shutdown is about the most one-sided, least nuanced thing I have ever seen in politics. The government has been shut-down by a minority of one house of Congress for reasons having nothing to do with the budget at hand.
And Barack Obama has performed no official action in the thing at all. He has not vetoed anything because Congress has not passed anything.
On the other hand, the Clinton vs. Gingrich shutdown(s) were about disputes over the budget, involving a budget passed by majorities of BOTH house of Congress, and directly the result of Presidential action (Clinton vetoed the budget)
Republicans in Congress receive more of the blame for the shutdown: 44 percent of Americans blame them, while 35 percent put more blame on President Obama and the Democrats in Congress. These views are virtually the same as they were last week before the shutdown, when Americans were asked who they would blame if a shutdown occurred.
When the government shut down back in November 1995, 51 percent of Americans blamed the Republicans in Congress, while 28 blamed President Bill Clinton.

Today's circumstances are vastly more clear cut. Today's situation isn't two parties fighting over a budget, or the legislature and executive fighting using their Constitutional powers. It's a rampant abuse of power with only one side to blame.
Blame Clinton 28%
Blame Republicans 51%
Blame Obama 35%
Blame Republicans 44%
The American political zeitgeist is much
worse than it used to be.
