(23 posts)I think this type of ad, using this kind of info. would be much more effective. The baby crying is unlikely to convince anyone to change their mind. The purpose of an ad is to gain support and change minds, not annoy people.

People in relax mode watching game. Get that noise. I do not think it is good. Not to mention using a child in this manner

(14,311 posts)I know Boehner's worse. But when has calling somebody a crybaby changed a mind? When someone calls you a liberal crybaby, do you go, "Oh, you're right, I guess I'll change my position"? Or do you dig in? (I dig in.)
So it's annoying, unhelpful, counterproductive, uninformative and likely alienating the people we need to move. Big, big waste of money. Other than that, it's not so bad. Just kidding, it sucks ass.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)He needs a hug.
And it is rude to compare him to Boehner. This child is obviously upset, and has trouble using words to communicate about it.
Poor baby.

(11,986 posts)I don't like the ad either. Someone decided to film a crying baby instead of comforting him, to make a political point.
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)thesquanderer
(11,986 posts)Doesn't matter whether it was filmed yesterday or 5 years ago for stock. It's still kind of disturbing that someone capitalized on the kid's misery.
Pretzel_Warrior
(8,361 posts)which is why it is perfect. You don't think they combed through LOTS of footage to hit that balance? By the way, it's being annoying will cause some to come back into the room with the TV during commercial break to specifically figure out what this is about.
Based on that, I'd say this is targeted at a more female demographic despite being during a football game.
IdaBriggs
(10,559 posts)I think this was made by a man. I am a mother. I want to pick the child up and comfort him.
I do not want to pick Boehner up and comfort him.

(34,051 posts)i started wondering what s/he was crying about? maybe separation anxiety when mom left the room? maybe a cherished cuddle blanket was lost or taken away? maybe s/he wasn't feeling good or was starting to run a fever. or is overly tired. the ad creates sympathy for the baby.
and, like another poster said, i wondered why the baby was being filmed instead of comforted.
i think it completely misses the intended mark.
why not show clips of bohner's crying jags? his drunken crying jags? or come up with another idea that doesn't create such sympathy or mental distraction that overshadows the entire point of the ad?

(3,759 posts)... throwing an unreasonable temper tantrum. There was no sense of anger. That baby looked like it was scared or in pain. I get that it's a joke and we're supposed to be laughing but it's hard when to do when that baby seems genuinely upset.

I doubt if this child knows or understands he's making a political ad.

Waste of money.
You need something that hits home, such as people laid off because of this, or healthcare and social services suspended.
This is just a gimmick, and while it may be satisfying to progressives, I do not think it delivers to the independents

"They asked me to give out a half dozen checks quickly before we got to the end of the month and I complied. And I did it on the House floor, which I regret. I should not have done. It's not a violation of the House rules, but it's a practice thats gone on here for a long time that we're trying to stop and I know I'll never do it again"

(725 posts)You know how their heads work: a bunch of Democrats are making this baby suffer to make a commercial!
The baby in the ad is too small to cast as a brat. At that size, no matter what they want or need, it can be overwhelming and they haven't any way to express pain, tired, fevered, unhappiness other than by crying. It's hard not to worry what's making him cry and people who aren't into politics may or may not know about Boner's crying jags so it's not even very funny, in my opinion.
Put the sound of the baby crying with Post 78 by Prosense: (the collage of pictures of the orange man really crying) - now THAT's funny -

(1,828 posts)This is a great ad for rowdy football fans! Should cut right through chatter and make them pay attention just in time for the mocking of Boehner. I read all these comments about how loooong it goes on, but I didn't think it was long at all. Particularly because it's just long enough for people to stop talking and see what it is, and by then, the voiceover kicks in.
Then again, I'm a mom who never felt a tinge of sympathy for my kids when they were fake crying for something I told them they couldn't have. When they were hurt? Sure. But otherwise, I never felt they needed comfort for whiny fears. So I don't watch this and feel I need to comfort.
Like I said, I think by the time viewers stop to see what the ad is, the Boehner tuff starts. I think there's good potential for it to be effective.
