"Ghoulish," "Sick," "Aspiring Baby Killer": Right-Wing Media's Response To Wendy Davis Governor Run
Conservative media viciously attacked Texas State Senator Wendy Davis after she announced her candidacy for governor, linking Davis to infanticide and calling an image of her with kids "sick" and "disgusting."

(145,242 posts)This is going to be a nasty campaign and Texas republicans fight dirty. These tactics can backfire such as the attacks on Ann Richards in 1988. Already, Greg Abbott's campaign have called Senator Davis some nasty names including: "retard barbie" and "abortion barbie" and have stated that as a woman she is too stupid to be governor. This is only the start of the campaign and I expect it get worse

I bet at least if Wendy didn't know what a VP does, she would READ up on it instead of telling the media she didn't even know what a VP does. I bet Palin still doesn't know.

But I think Wendy can stand the heat! Go, Wendy!!!
I've seen the "abortion barbie" comment on several Facebook postings. That's so indicative of how they think. Always sexist.

(145,242 posts)Texas Democratic Party Chairman Gilberto Hinojosa wasnt surprised but he was disgusted. That Greg Abbott would thank a supporter for calling Senator Wendy Davis a Retard Barbie is absolutely disgusting and disturbing. This is what Republicans think about women that a Harvard law school graduate, State Senator, and a long time fighter for Texas families deserves such inappropriate slander. Greg Abbott endorses such disrespect. The people of Texas deserves so much better than this from their public officials. And the women of Texas deserve leaders who respect them as human beings.
Later that evening, Abbott tweeted I thank supporters on Twitter, but I dont endorse anyones offensive language.
Dude, it wasnt merely the language that was offensive. And where the hell is the apology? Hell, Greg, you offended women, developmentally challenged people and the Mattel Toy Company all at once. That ought to win some kind of award for being the trifecta of scum.
Greg Abbot and the Texas GOP are planning on fighting dirty.

(10,362 posts)But good luck to her. If nothing else, if she can create a competitive race it will redirect money from more competitive races.
And who knows? In 10 years, she'll still only be 60 and Texas might be purple enough for her to win.
Good luck! F- the haters.

Fuck that. Texas is working on a good grass roots organization to get people registered and GOTV. Maybe if people stopped having a defeatists attitude straight out of the gate, we'd have a better chance. Or you know, if hte national party actually spent money in Texas, that would help. They're predicting Abbot will spend up to $40 MILLION on this election. Davis needs $$$$.

When the reality is, if Texas were solidly blue, there wouldn't be a republican in the white house for a generation.

(145,242 posts)It is frustrating living here at times but progress is being made. There is more excitement here in Texas compared to any race that I can remember and I have been voting in this state since 1976. I was happy to see Anne Richards run but it was mainly due to the fact that the GOP governor at that time was an idiot. There are crowds at events that I have not seen in Texas.

(29,414 posts)why are there STILL so many DUers that can't support us when we're trying to change things for the better? Is it because the national Dems still don't support us either? We've had to make these changes on our own all these years, ever since Rove and Delay screwed things up miserably for us (they "experimented" on us first, and then took it nationally.)
You wishes of "good luck" are empty. Texas is purple enough right now, if y'all would just look at a voting map by population density for once.

(145,242 posts)Here is a post from the president of my county's Silver Democrats Club (the over 50 group) concerning an incident at out local county fair on our club's facebook page
Skip Belt posted in Silver Democrats of Fort Bend

Saturday night at the Silver Democrats booth at the Fort Bend County Fair Merdie Robertson and I were visited by several Republicans taking a break from their politicking at their booth. After fishing around to find out who we might have as candidates in Fort Bend, one particularly obnoxious young man began yammering in a loud voice that we were wasting our time. He pointed at our sign of showing Democratic issues Standing with Texas Women. He insisted that Wendy Davis would not be elected governor because God was on their side and that she was for late term abortion. He let it be known to all that he had been an atheist as a child, but now was a Christian and implied that we were sinful. I opined that he was pretty confused as a child and was still confused. I explained that standing up for women was recognizing and supporting a womans exclusive right to choose and that the 20 week limitation on this right passed by the Republican controlled legislature would be struck down as unconstitutional. He continued to make over the top statements so I suggested rather firmly that he go back to his booth, since his objective was to make a show. I thought to myself that the young loudmouth had the exact same sneer as Ted Cruz and that he probably practices in front of a mirror. It is not hard to spot them even before they speak.
The GOP is going to get nasty in this race. Over 20 weeks is not a late term abortion. These nutcases are serious and I can see that this is going to be a very nasty election cycle.

I loved Ann Richards but she was a fluke. People could not stand Clayton Williams after the rape analogy. Women came out in droves not to vote for Ann but to vote against Clayton Williams.

"EMILY's List knew Wendy Davis was a tireless and courageous fighter for Texas women and families even before she spoke out for an inspiring 13 hours against the extreme anti-woman agenda," says EMILY's List President Stephanie Schriock in the endorsement. "Her impressive record of championing equal pay for women, vital education funding, and voting rights shows her deep commitment to giving all Texans a fair shot. ... The EMILYs List community of more than two million members is eager to lace up our sneakers and help this passionate and steadfast leader become Texas next governor."
