GOP Rep. Ellmers Asks Her Salary Be Withheld

GOP Rep. Ellmers Asks Her Salary Be Withheld

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) has sent a letter to House officials requesting that her congressional salary of $174,000 be withheld amid the shutdown, according to The Charlotte News & Observer.

The request is a reversal for Ellmers, who earlier in the week told WTVD in Raleigh, N.C. that she would not be deferring her paycheck during the shutdown.

"I need my paycheck. That's the bottom line," Ellmers said. "I understand that there may be some other members who are deferring their paychecks, and I think it's admirable. I'm not in that position."

Ellmers fielded criticism for the remark and began backtracking on Friday telling CNN that she would consider deferring her next paycheck, according to the News & Observer.

Ah, the consequences of a backlash.

House GOPer: 'I Need My Paycheck' During Shutdown

Rep. Renee Ellmers (R-NC) told a local television station that she would not be deferring her pay during the government shutdown, as some other members have done.

"I need my paycheck. That's the bottom line," Ellmers told WTVD in Raleigh, N.C. "I understand that there may be some other members who are deferring their paychecks, and I think that's admirable. I'm not in that position."

According to Ellmers's official website, she was a registered nurse for 21 years before being elected to Congress. Her husband Brent, the website says, is a general surgeon.

Democratic Rep. G.K. Butterfield also told WTVD that he wouldn't be deferring his pay. "I don't think there should be a shutdown," he said. "I didn't create the shutdown."

Rick Pr.... The affordable care act is the law! put you're petty school yard games in you're pocket and get on with the business of running this country. quit trying to blame the Democrats for holding this up. you're holding millions of people hostage, people you're supposed to care about. delaying you're paycheck? what kind of grandstanding is that? how about you donate your salary to some of the millions of people that won't be getting another paycheck? employees of many of the National parks have already been told by supervisors that they won't be returning until next year, they just lost two months pay because of your ridiculous bickering.

She was paid on the 1st, will be paid again 1Nov, unless the govt. is still in shutdown. If not, she won't miss so much as a penny of her pay.

I think this makes her look even worse. Her first instinct was to hold onto money she didn't even need, while voting to withhold paychecks from 800,000 hard working Americans.

No matter what the Congress person says they can not decline to be paid. By that I mean they can not defer pay until a later date and they are also not able to decline to be paid at all. They can give the money to charity if they want but they get paid no matter what sort of show-boat gyrations they go through in front of the cameras or mikes.
