Chief Justice of Ark Supreme Court enroute to DC to "bypass shutdown"??

One of my local news stations in Little Rock is sending one of it's reporters on a flight today along with Chief Justice of Ark Supreme Court. This is her Tweet:

"Inflight interview w/ Chief Justice of Ark Supreme Court. They're calling him the secret legal weapon to bypass the #Shutdown #HonorFlight"

The news station seems to want me to believe something big will come of this trip. Does anyone know whats going on here? I'm not sure I understand.

From Chief Justice Jim Hannah's website that is the only publication he has listed.

If any of this tweeted information is true, perhaps it's the forgotten law part. I've seen several articles on presidential powers and the 14th Amendment.

Just a thought. No, I take that back, it's just another wag*.

state judges fail to properly consider individual rights under state constitutions, by focusing on federal constitutional law.

Here is the concluding paragraph:

“State constitutions . . . are a font of . . . liberties.”80 Justice Brennan counseled that sole reliance upon federal law is misplaced, that we must also consider our state constitutions, our state statutes, and our state common law.81 Under our system of federalism, the courts of the states are no less protectors of freedom than the federal courts. To the contrary, on a state level we deal more directly with the day-to-day lives of our citizens. This puts state courts in closer proximity to the events that affect our citizens' lives. State courts should be most aware of the threats to citizens' freedom and liberty, and our state laws also often afford our citizens greater rights and protection than federal law. State courts are uniquely positioned and responsible to apply our state law to improve the lives of our citizens and guarantee life, liberty, property, and happiness.

Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Hannah

Chief Justice Jim Hannah says he and the other justices are developing plans for an outreach campaign to engage Arkansans in a conversation about the judicial system’s function as one of the three branches of government, along with the executive and legislative branches.

“All the polls we’ve seen (show) there’s a lack of understanding of the population about the three branches of government and about government in general. We feel this outreach is very, very important,” Hannah said in an interview with the Arkansas News Bureau.

“It’s so important to not only the judiciary but all three branches of government that the people understand and appreciate how this government works and functions,” he said. “We can’t function in the judiciary, and the two other branches can’t function either, unless you have the support and the confidence and trust of the people.”

Many lack an understanding of basic concepts such as the separation of powers, and that lack of understanding “crosses all lines,” reaching even into the offices of state legislators, he said. “You do see from time to time some legislation that’s proposed which undermines the judiciary and violates the separation of powers and the rule of law,” Hannah said.

We are going to educate the House Rep Cons about the basic fucking functions of the fucking government. Maybe give them job descriptions while we're there. Perhaps acquaint them with the legal ramifications, both criminal and civil, of their treacherous plot. RICO could come up.

From back in September 2011:

The Arkansas Supreme Court announced in a press release this week that President Obama has nominated Arkansas Supreme Court Chief Justice Jim Hannah to serve on the Board of Directors of the State Justice Institute.

The White House Press Release includes the following biography of Justice Hannah:

Chief Justice Jim Hannah is currently serving as Chief Justice of the Arkansas Supreme Court.  He was first elected as an Associate Justice in 2000 and re-elected as Chief Justice in 2004 and 2008.  He was appointed by President Barack Obama to the Board of Directors of the State Justice Institute in 2010.  Prior to serving on the Arkansas Supreme Court, he served as a Chancery/Probate Judge in the 17th Judicial District from 1979 to 1999.  Chief Justice Hannah maintained a private law practice for ten and a half years before he was elected to the trial bench. While in private practice, he also served as the city attorney for Searcy, Arkansas, as city attorney for several communities in White County, as a city  judge  for Kensett, Arkansas and Rosebud, Arkansas, as deputy prosecuting attorney for Woodruff County, and as the White County Juvenile Judge.   Chief Justice Hannah has served as President on the Board of the Arkansas Judicial Council.  He has served as Chairman of the Arkansas Judicial Resources Assessment Committee, Legislative Committee, and Retirement Committee.  He has also served on the board of the Conference of Chief Justices and is currently serving as Co-Chair of the Committee of Families and Courts.   In addition, he sits on the U.S. Supreme Court Judicial Conference Committee on Federal-State Jurisdiction and the Arkansas Supreme Court Committees on Technology, Child Support, and Foster Care.  Chief Justice Hannah received a B.S.B.A. from the University of Arkansas, Fayetteville, and a J.D. from the University of Arkansas School of Law.

This may be more B.S. about wheeling veterans in to the WWII monument and such, not the entire shutdown.

On the other hand and this is a long shot, if this Chief Justice and the veterans coming along on the flight plan on persuading the House that it's their duty to pass a clean spending and negotiate with the Senate on the final outcome, that could be a good thing.

Thanks for the thread, Cannikin.

1. He's from a Southern State and perhaps that intangible will make it easier for them to relate to his perspective.

2. I believe he's flying in with veterans as well, that may add some weight with the House as to the growing gravity of the situation.

Combining those two dynamics and you're coming close to hitting their percieved primary political base even if he is a Democrat.
