He knows that John Boehner and his cohorts, the Tea Baggers, are unpredictable. They are deceitful and cunning.
If they have any ideas about passing the debt limit with restrictions and demands, they are making a big mistake.
If they wait until the last minute to pass it and the Senate has to pass it, when it comes to the President for his signature, he will veto it and send it back to the House to fix it.
If they still refuse and send it back to him one last time, he will invoke the 14th Amendment and state that the government must pay its debts.
Their only recourse after that is to impeach.
If that is their plan, he is ready to take them on. They will not be permitted to default on the debt. This is a big test for the President and he will pass it. This is a big part of his legacy.
And we should not forget that it takes two-thirds to over-ride a veto.

(9,474 posts)So far, so good. It's great to see the President and Dems holding the line.

(11,495 posts)And that could be the game plan for them, but after their ratings have dropped, and the majority of the country is blaming them for the shutdown, I think it would be bad for them to do so. With the public already pissed at them, and if the president has to use the 14th Amendment to stop the country from defaulting, it would make the president look like the adult, and republicans would once again look like children throwing a tantrum because they didn't get their way. Impeachment might be what the crazy tea party wants, but it really think it will backfire on them if they try it.

(26,355 posts)They'd probably lockstep it through the House, and it would fail in the Senate.
But on top of that, the people would see that the President acted to keep the economy from falling apart, perhaps by bending a rule, but they'll see he did it to protect the nation, so if the teabaggers want to throw him out for doing that, they'll find the people will give them zero support.
It'll blow up in their faces even worse than the Clinton impeachment did. And just in time for 2014.

(26,355 posts)An impeachment vote would go pretty much along party lines, which means the GOP would get barely above 50%.

I sure hope you are correct about the Prez.

(on edit) Also, we should point out that it takes two/thirds to over-ride a veto by the President. The House will be holding a hot potato.

(5,264 posts)Nothing says good government when the ACA is working out so well for so many, than to start impeachment against the person who brought it to us.
They might go into negative numbers. Naw, won't happen. Still a lot of brain-dead teabaggers out there.
