Here you thought you might still have a few years in you. Miley Cyrus puts that idea to rest.
Miley appeared on the "Today" show this morning -- in a pair of really short shorts -- when Matt asked if Miley's hyper "sexual side" is just a phase or something she expects to grow out of?
Miley replied with a pretty direct shot at Lauer ... a shot he didn't really seem to get at first.
Best part of the exchange ... Matt reveals his age (way older than 40) ... and Miley says, "Then you're really definitely not sexual."
Video at link.

(20,582 posts)I hadn't paid much attention to her apart from seeing my little nieces over the moon ecstatic after they'd gotten back from seeing her in a concert in ND somewhere. Yesterday I saw her sing Dolly Parton's (her godmother?!) beautiful 'Jolene' posted here in the lounge, then that hysterical SNL parody of herself and the GOP and a few interviews she's given where she comes across as a very smart, savvy, kind to her fans ... young women with a voice that I, imho, think will take her far. I think she's going to be just fine.

(37,573 posts)but I probably should not be. Cyrus' show "Doc" was pretty darn cool, where he played a country doctor who came to NYC and was helping people in various medical situations. Really very positive TV show I thought, and I understood Hannah Montana to be the same way.
Then again, it is not like Cyrus wrote the show. Reminds me of what I read about Cheryl Tiegs, that she was "cheesecake marketed as apple pie".
Or it could be one of those old commercials "I am not a decent person - but I play one on TV".

By that point if not sooner, she'll be forced by the way her naturally living, breathing, changing body becomes invisible to objectifying male scum to confront the possibility that she can have a subjective sexual experience that doesn't have to be mediated by woman-hating industry standards.
It's really becoming kind of freeing, actually, to not be predated upon everywhere I go now that I'm post 40. Thank heavens there are enough good men who resist and even challenge this enculturation, or as a straight chick, I'd be SOL.

(8,758 posts)I don't care that she's bolting from Hanna Montana (not sure why, she could milk that cow for years and never really have to work again). That's her business. And I don't care that she's doing this turbo slut performance art thing. I find it boring actually. What she's doing has all been done before and with much better class and art (see Madonna and Lady Gaga and a platoon of other musicians). Nothing new or interesting is being said by her music. Its vapid dreck that's been done before. What's her schtick? "I'm like Britney, but with more tongue"?
What bugs me about her is she's such a goddamn idiot. When I was 20 I was full of stupid too, the difference is I didn't have a media circus to voice my stupidity for the world to see.
I also find her sad. The Media is egging her on to be even more stupid and outrageous because it sells ad spots. She's being used up by the celebrity entertainment torture device. And when they're doing playing with her, they'll throw her a side like a broken toy.
Her dad should to know better. He did his time in that game and he was used up and thrown away too. But he seems to be encouraging her to continue playing the game the cameras want her to play.
Oh and her tongue, totally not sexy. Even if she's naked on a big silver ball, or pleasuring a sledge hammer. I think she's pretty enough with out it. When she lolls her tongue out like some kind of octopus tentacle, I'm turned off.
davidn3600
(6,342 posts)And she is trying to follow Madonna and Lady Gaga model of making it big. The problem is those two actually have some talent in the music field and can back up their acts with solid material. Miley really doesn't have the talent to back up this massive PR push she's putting on. She's trying to gain an audience that frankly doesn't like her and sees through her. The majority of her fan base is still the mid-to-late teens. She's not getting the adults.
HappyMe
(20,277 posts)Madonna and Gaga both have very nasal voices. Madonna hasn't had any 'material' in years. She's a washed up, middle aged woman wearing a grill, ffs. Gaga has costumes, and that's about it. Her work for equality is good.

Miley, any teenager can say stupid things to any adult. And you may think they don't "get it" but they do. It's just not as interesting as you think it is, hon.
Your voice? that could have been interesting. But right now you're just another girl flashing body parts on TV. It doesn't take any talent for that. Next!
Know why Madonna did all that stuff on stage? Her voice was just OK. She had to compensate to sell records. And she was a genius at it. A real businesswoman. Don't ever mistake her act as anything but business. And everyone in the business knew it and respected it.

(5,815 posts)There's nothing particularly wrong with Miley. She hasn't said or done anything several dozen haven't said and done before her. But, because she's a girl, and a former "good girl" at that, we now have to give her a nice social trial by fire as soon as she expresses her sexuality. God knows, we don't heap this scorn about male singers who run around with their abs and sexually suggestive poses.
But Miley is our 15 minute culture Satan, so let's have at her. Girls expressing sexuality must be burned at the stake.
Which is actually frankly weird to see who's leading this particular crusade, but meh.
As for her talents. She actually has a nice voice. I enjoy Wrecking Ball as a bit of pop. And the video of her purely singing expresses extraordinary sorrow and prettiness with very clean vocals. It's very affecting.
Yeah, then she porns it on up on the ball itself, but the woman is not bereft of talent in the slightest.
It's a shame how easily we can be goaded into cultural torch and pitchfork mode.
As for her comments, buh, she was clearly being somewhat facetious there. She knows how to yank a chain. So she yanked this one hard. Looks like she succeeded.
BainsBane
(53,072 posts)with no talent. At least from me, it has nothing to do with sexism. Sexism may underlie some of the controversy around her, but she is eagerly engaging in the whole thing. She has chosen to present herself as a commodity, and I'm not buying any. I also don't see anything remotely sexual or sexy about her act. She's trying hard to do what she thinks is sexual, but I would be surprised if anyone finds it sexy. It's just pathetic.
What sexist is the industry that sells images like hers as something young girls should aspire to.
Prism
(5,815 posts)As for talent, that's a subjective judgement. To ensure I mean what I said, I just rewatched Wrecking Ball on YouTube. The vocals are solid, her acting is very solid. The pain in her eyes, the slight hoarseness in the voice. She has talent there.
From a cultural perspective, I don't find much wrong with her work. It has merit.
From a social perspective, I get why people dislike her. "Young person does something stupid." Yes, and? So some of them do. Somewhere, Justin Beiber is breathing a sigh of relief that Miley distracted us from despising him.
I'm a gay man, so I am not at all invested in whether or not she's sexy. And do you not think young male performers aren't sexualized to an absurd degree? I know I did not hallucinate the past couple years of being subjected to Taylor Laughtner's torso (my barber even tried to give me his haircut, for fark's sake).
That's the entertainment industry. Sex, sex, sex. Guys, girls, whomever. They will appeal sexually at every angle. If they thought they could get a couple extra million showing the outline of a guy's scrotum, you'd be seeing Matt Damon's sack on every billboard.
But I'm not going to sit there and denigrate someone like Miley personally because she's just coasting along to the nature of the beast. And I'm certainly not going to do all, "Trashy, no talent" criticism when she clearly has something there to offer. I'm interested to see what she'll be producing in five or ten years time.
BainsBane
(53,072 posts)in either her or Beiber. I don't get it. I guess I'm just cranky because I'm too old to have sex.
You do know I'm a card carrying Feminazi, right? Some of my feminist friends agree with you. I don't see her as a worthy cause though. I do think she's good for a laugh or two though.
Prism
(5,815 posts)I mean, when I listen to Wrecking Ball, I'm not really bringing ideology into it. I'm relating to the music, the emotion, the expression on her face. I get where she's coming from. I've had that relationship, especially when young. I'm not thinking about what this means for my politics or ideology. She's doing pop, and pop is always an appeal to the emotional space you're inhabiting at any given moment. Someone who's in a deteriorating relationship will find that song far more powerful than I do, I imagine.
I don't see her as a cause. I just see what she's doing. Does this resonate? Does it speak to me in some way? Maybe yes, maybe no. That's it. That's the only real consideration for me with an artist. I don't really care if she furthers my idea of anything, because that's not why I'm listening to her. I'm listening to her because she's speaking in that particular to something I've felt in a relationship. And in that song, I think it's called "Can't Stop Us" or something, I didn't relate or care for it, because my crazy partying days are over. So, it doesn't resonate or work for me.
She's just a singer. A young one. Young people, especially ones raised in Hollywood, sometimes say and do stupid things. That's ok. We've covered that ground a billion times, and we'll cover it a billion more. I don't get personally invested. Either the song is good or not. For me, subjectively, I think Wrecking Ball is a good song, so I find merit for her work on that level.
I just do not understand this cultural need to take her out because she did something on stage once or said something stupid. Lord, someone like Madonna is considered a great. Has anyone really listened to the heaping pile of nonsenical bullshit she's handed down over decades? That woman is a self-involved idiot of the highest caliber, and yet we still recognize her Art.
I don't want a cause with entertainment or art. I just want solid reflections of the human condition. Wrecking Ball is a good one. What more do we want, and should we want more?
BainsBane
(53,072 posts)What's the cultural need for her at all? Why do we have to see her on our television sets and hear her on our radios? The only good thing I can say about the wrecking ball video is she pretty much kept her tongue in her mouth.
What more should we want? Decent music to listen to. A decent performance. Some actual dancing, or something. Being young isn't an excuse. There are good musicians who are young. This is one I like, also from the VMAs. She sings well. The music is positive and has social meaning. She's also beautiful and IMO a great role model for women. But the sexist music industry and media culture isn't going to promote Mary Lambert because she doesn't conform to the body expectations that women look like 12 year old boys.
IMO, she is wayyyy sexier than Miley.
Prism
(5,815 posts)Look, Miley isn't my first choice of music. Hell, most of what pop offers has been done and better. I'm old enough that I'm not thrilled with Natalie Imbruglia making "Torn" a hit. I'm a devotee of the original Ednaswap version. It's rawer and speaks far more to the emotional angst being exhibited. But pop loved the cleaned up, prettified Natalie banging it out, and then it became a hit. Natalie introduced me to the song, I loved it, then I looked up its roots and learned about the original version that I adore to this day. Pop put something into an easily digestible, wide-audience form, and it was up to me to explore better.
Mary Lambert is lovely, but I'll challenge that a bit. One word. Adele. Adele is a musical, emotive genius. And culture and industry recognize that. So, there is something there. Yes, someone like Adele has more challenges, but we, as a culture, will give way to solid music despite the image.
If it helps, I do think someone like Miley is too reliant on image. Mediocre artists usually are. And I'm not arguing that Miley is Great Art. She's not. She's just pop, and pop is the realm of mediocrity usually. I liked Lady Gaga until she lost all touch with what she was trying to do and decided to be weird for weird's sake. (Editing is a good thing).
But why is she on our television all the time? Eh, why is anyone? Seriously. I listen to the radio during my commute, and I'd like to personally bury half these singers in a shallow grave because they're so entirely over-exposed. The worst is Pink. I love Pink. Adore even. I really enjoy her music and perspective. But I swear to god, if my radio station plays her one. more. time.
The industry thinks we're stupid. Why slay the artist for the industry's sins?
BainsBane
(53,072 posts)Doesnt mean I need to like or respect her any more than I do Walmat. Yes, Adele. Her talent was too great for them to ignore. The music industry complains about declining profits, and I attribute it to the deterioration of popular music. There have been ways to pirate music, only people still bought it because they loved the music. More and more radio stations are turning to classic formats. The industry's focus on "Artists" like Miley is part of the reason why.

(5,815 posts)And that is an objection I actually share. And if that were the thrust of this concern with Miley, I'd certainly be sympathetic. She's over-commercialized. But so are many, many artists. Just off my daily hearing from radio, I'd say Miley, Pink, Phillip Phillips, Bruno Mars, and Fun need to be transported and dumped somewhere in central Siberia.
But the Miley objections seem personal. People have decided, "Hey, this is who we hate right now!" And in six weeks, we'll hate someone else. Our culture is set up for that for whatever reason. I don't hate her. She does decent work and has a media personality designed to fit with what Americans are consuming.
If you really, truly, viscerally hate Miley's sexual idiocy, don't bother about her. Bother about American culture. We're the ones who told her and the industry that this would sell. She's sniffing out the money we give her, and then we're hating her for it.
Who's at fault in that transaction?

(135,060 posts)She is entitled to make dumb statements and probably will make more of them before she is 40. Not sure why she garners all the attention on DU.

(135,060 posts)I will admit I was a bit put off by her dance at the award show but she is an entertainer after all and getting her name all over twitter/Facebook etc. is really what it is about right now in the business.

(53,072 posts)and what a terrible product she is. That VMA performance is the single worst musical act I've ever seen in my life. For me, it has nothing to do with it being "sexual" or provocative because I found it neither. It was just plain bad.
I don't really bother with her. I happened to see this piece and posted it because I thought people would get a kick out of it. Then I've responded to a few of the replies. You have been the most persistent.

(5,815 posts)There will always be an artist there meant to top themselves. It's kind of informal vs the Grammy, and promoted as an environment where "anything can happen." So she twerked to Robin Thicke. I'm actually stymied that Miley is the focus there. He made a video with female models bouncing around with full on boobification, he wore a hideous Beetlejuice outfit while oozing sleazy male, and we're worried that Miley was kind of mecky. What about him? No one really cares. Yes, I know he's generated a few articles on feminism sites, but he hasn't generated nearly the hate machine Miley has in popular culture.
And therein lays my wonder if this isn't all kind of sexist. Miley has come in for her ten minutes of hate, but Robin Thicke isn't getting nearly the same kind of blowback in pop culture. I don't mean on feminism sites. I mean, if you look at pop culture, like reddit or 4chan or what have you, Miley is generating full on hate while Robin gets a pass. What gives here?
As far as worst musical acts, that was pretty bad, but I've certainly seen worse. We're primed by media to believe we're always witness the X Ever! Miley is fairly tame all that has come before given. But her publicists are ecstatic we think otherwise.
Sorry about my persistence. I've kind of enjoyed our discussion =(

Even so, who the hell are you to say she isn't a worthy cause.
Really, your obsession with this kid is bordering on creepy already.
Don't listen to her music, quit looking at that fabulous fount of 'knowledge' - TMZ.

Most troubling is that Miley is an extremely poor role model for young girls and teens.

and
2. Did she say recently she thinks young girls and teen should emulate her behavior?
In other words, what values are being exchanged here. I think it's What You Think Miley Should Be Doing vs. What Miley Thinks Miley Should Be Doing.
Tricky business, but I'm willing to let artists do what they will generally.

(20,277 posts)There's nothing wrong with prostitutes.
Who gives a crap about 'role models for young girls'. I find it ridiculous that people have to have some 'role model' for their damn kids.
If you don't like some music, then don't listen to it or watch the videos. Pretty simple.

(38,187 posts)attempting to catch an imaginary fly? That's my question. It's almost like she's been getting stage advice from Gene Simmons and applying it miserably. I really don't like that kid either. Both her and Justin Bieber need to crash and burn already and get ready for their stint on Where Are They Now when it comes up years from now. It can't happen soon enough. All those other spoiled brat right wing Disney kids need to do the same. I don't like any of them.

(12,665 posts)I don't think people are giving her near enough credit. TMZ highlighted the stupid ass question that Matt ask her, which she answered in a smart ass way.
He also ask if she regretted the MTV awards show, and she said along the lines of" why should I. Here we are still talking about it a month later.
She also said along the lines of: What matters is how I treat people in real life. Not what I do on stage. I have to be myself.
I was actually a pretty damn good interview for a 20 year old.
TMZ makes money getting hits from one little snippet. So, imagine that's what they would highlight.
