WOW: Majority Of Texas Voters Want To Legalize Marijuana

A majority of Texas voters support marijuana legalization, according to a recent survey.

Public Policy Polling found that 58 percent of Texans "support making marijuana legal for adults and regulating it like alcohol." Even more -- 61 percent -- were in favor of decriminalizing marijuana possession and instead punishing violations with a civil citation.

Texas law currently views possession of marijuana, even on a minute scale, as a criminal offense, punishable by $2,000 in fines and up to a year of jail time.

The PPP survey of 860 randomly selected Texas voters was released by the Marijuana Policy Project.

"Most Texans agree that marijuana sales should be conducted by legitimate businesses instead of drug cartels in the underground market," MPP executive director Rob Kampia said in a release.

In addition, the poll found that a majority of Texas voters support changing state law to permit critically ill and terminal patients to use medical marijuana -- only 31 percent said they were opposed.

Please, please, please, please, please look at this map and notice that it isn't "Austin, a island of blue in a sea of red" and hasn't been for a while!

I think it's a pretty cool map as well. Use it elsewhere as needed, because it is perfect for making points on the "red state, blue state" meme.

If there were a higher resolution version somewhere, I'd take it to an engineering print shop for a full GIS-quality wall map

And I think this is an issue that reaches far beyond libertarian pot heads at this point.

We're starting to see polls with results like this in other unexpected places, like Louisiana and Oklahoma, in the past couple of weeks.

And nationwide, legalization is now consistently winning majority support.

The end times of marijuana prohibition are upon us.

This state contains 26 million people and three of the top ten most populated cities in the United States. We're home to 50 companies that are listed on the Fortune 500. Our GDP is the 14th largest in the world and we are the largest exporter in the US.

Sometimes I think people actually believe we all still travel by wagon and live in farm houses.

If people in the national party would quit blowing us off as a lost cause and start spending money here - instead of just taking it...

Oh, forget it. Why bother with closed minds?

We're going blue on our own and when we do, it's over for the GOP - over.

You can thank us then.

Even the Conservatives as starting to think this way. Even some RELIGIOUS Conservatives I know are starting to think this way.

The consensus seems to be:

"Legalize it, regulate it like alcohol, pass strict laws vis-a-vis driving under the influence, and most importantly, tax the hell out it. If people want to get high, let them pay for the privilege."
