Bill Maher: I want to correct this one idea they have, that Americans dont like Obamacare, because I see this poll all the time. 54% of Americans are against Obamacare. Not really true, because 16% of that 54% want it to be more Left. They want single payer. So its really only 38% of the people who are on your team (Tea Party Team).
Matt Kibbe: I dont think thats right.
Bill Maher: No, that is right. Those are facts. We are not arguing opinion now. Those are the facts.
Rep. Alan Grayson: And these are people who recognize that there are fundamental, how should I put this, conflict of interest between you and your insurance company. Even if we switch to no government involvement at all, people would still get insurance and they would be in a situation where every time you needed care you would be taking money out of the pockets, the profit of your insurance company. And we havent taken a step beyond that. But Obamacare does do useful things. Its put 4 million people who are up to the age of 26 on the rolls by joining their parents plans. Its closed 3/4 of the donut hole so seniors dont have to choose between their medicines and pay their rent. It has taken 35 million people including my wife by the way, 35 million people who couldnt get insurance because of pre-existing conditions, now they can. And now, insurance companies if you have expensive care cant literally pull the plug on you when you are in a coma. Those are all good things. And those are all things that the Tea Party is desperate to eliminate.

(2,380 posts)that came out of this exchange is that Obama care will inevitably poll much stronger as time goes by. That's exactly what terrifies the Republicans.

(6,440 posts)16% of 54% is 8.64%. Either Maher phrased it incorrectly, meaning 16% of the total sample, or he committed an error so glaring that even I, possibly the most math-challenged person on DU, could spot it.

(971 posts)The 16% is of the total. The eighties include the ones that want single payer as opposed to ACA.

(4,490 posts)In the polls 16% or so of total respondents didn't like Obamacare because it does not go far enough left. So just shy of 30% of the respondents who didn't like Obamacare likely prefer a public option or single payer.

"now, Congressman, that's not correct. Here are the facts..." oh right, then all the "good conservatives" will no longer do interviews outside of Fox or any of the multitude of right wing talkers out there.

Simply ask them to identify specifically what provisions of the ACA will ruin America. I don't think I have seen a single case where any of the major media has done that. They let these guys just throw around nebulous scare words without any substantiation at all.
