1. Maybe it's like those movies where the wacko with a knife or gun grabs a woman...

...he's been wooing and she's been refusing and exclaims, "If I can't have her, no one will!" The wacko is then subdued by the hero before harm comes to the woman.

Perhaps the teabaggers know they can't "have America" all to their own, so they believe that no one will.

Just my 2 cents...

They don't believe that the Government contributes much positive (if anything), so watching it shut down is no big deal. They are also told that the Default isn't really a default and won't be that big a deal, which they also believe.

They believe in their hearts that they are saving America. This comes from listening to and believing whackos such as Limbaugh and Beck. They still fail to see that what they are doing is bad for America. If they are successful and America crashes they will be convinced it is all Obama's fault. A sad condition for sure but, take heart in the fact that they are diminishing in numbers.
Boehner and his compatriots in congress care for nothing other than keeping their jobs. Just a few opinions in response to your question.

7. Maybe it's something like the posters and T-shirts we used to see during the Viet Nam era:
