It's the only object outside our galaxy visible.

I know that the Magellanic Clouds are both more visible (lower magnitude) than Andromeda. I believe that the Omega Centauri cluster is visible to the naked eye as well.

If you know where to look and are at a very dark location. I've seen it many times and it is very large.
But it is not nearly a bright as the pictures that you see from telescopes - which gather far more light than the eye can.
