NV Gov: Nevada faces catastrophe if government shutdown persists

Sandoval is an R, but not the tea-party-wing-nutty type of R-Gov that seems to be plaguing other states. He does a bit of the "it's both sides" nonsense in the article, but he does have a point: this shutdown is going to hit NV if it continues. Not only will the state-run programs and services (unemployment, food stamps, WIC, etc) that rely on federal money stop, a lot of those employees running the program will be furloughed. It would cost Nevada $50 million every month to continue the programs without federal money. The entire budget for the state was just over $6 billion for a two-year span.

I haven't seen any discussions about how other states are potentially handling an on-going shutdown scenario, thought this was an interesting read.

Most state agencies are able to continue federal programs until the end of the month, Sandoval was told in a mini-cabinet meeting today. But the cash-strapped state is already beginning to rack up a significant bill keeping essential programs running without the guarantee of the federal government reimbursing the costs.

“Particularly at the end of the month, I think that’s really when we are going to start to see … some catastrophic issues going on for the state,” Sandoval said.

“Time is short. We have hundreds of thousands of Nevadans facing real consequences. The first of the month is right around the corner.”

I haven't seen this mentioned in the media, but I think there will be a ton of pressure from Republicans at the state level to stop the shutdown.

Borgata gets NJ's 1st online gambling permit

ATLANTIC CITY — The Borgata Hotel Casino and Spa on Wednesday received New Jersey’s first Internet gambling permit.

The state Division of Gaming Enforcement said the casino was the first to file a complete application to offer online gambling, which will begin with a trial period on Nov. 21.

Borgata president Tom Ballance said the award of the state’s first online gambling permit to his casino shows the company’s commitment to take a leading role in Internet gambling. The Borgata is partnering with bwin.party to offer online betting.

7. That's so funny, and sad, because Nevada is basically owned by the federal government, and most

of the state's income (other than gambling) comes directly from Uncle Sam. I think the feds are the biggest employer in the state.

And yet Nevadans hate the federal gubmint more than most.

I never understood that. My grandfather, a county LEO and rancher who benefited from public lands policy AND Social Security AND Medicare was at least appreciative of the government, having been a good Dem. My uncle was a state LEO who loved to talk dirt about the feds, found gays disgusting, worshipped guns, yet loved all the jobs and money the Forest Service and Park Service brought to the area. And he also benefited greatly from Social Security and Medicare.

There is a strong schizophrenic streak there.
