Shitty employer-based family coverage...

...and the decision not to include dependent coverage in the definition of "affordable coverage".

This is basis of a lot of the "ACA is no good for me/my friend" posts that we seeing.

This represents a real issue with the implementation of the ACA that we as progressives should be concerned about. Bottom line, it's not fair that working class families offered shitty employer family coverage should be locked out of the ACA and allowed to pay well over 9.5% of their incomes for health insurance.

We should be advocating a fix to this, which may just require single payer (or at least public option).

Now the other flavor of posts we're seeing, the, "wah, why should I have to pay more for maternity/mental health/actual sick people" variety. Not so much. I would encourage those posters to reflect first on the low rates they were getting all these years while women and those with mental illness and other chronic illnesses were getting GOUGED or denied coverage altogether.

the insurance companies are too powerful.

i have medicare and it's not all you think it is. it doesn't cover everything and you still have to buy a supplemental policy from an insurance company and they're expensive.

my friend who's 68 couldn't wait for her husband to turn 65. she was paying $710 through her employer for coverage. now they're both on medicare which costs $105 each plus $260 each for their supplemental policies. so they're actually paying more and some of their docs don't take medicare. my friend used to see her shrink once a month, but she doesn't take medicare so now she only sees her every 3 months and pays $140 out of her own pocket. she can't afford $140 a month on top of their other expenses.

We'll be dumped off onto Medicare when the insurance companies don't want us anymore.
