My nephew joined the navy and just graduated from his training. The graduation was at the Naval base in Corpus Christi, Texas. All the graduates were promised air travel home on leave but because of the gov shutdown that was nixed and they had to get transportation home on their own.
He was one of the fortunate ones as his parents were able and willing to drive from Phoenix to Corpus Christi to pick him up. Many others are still stranded in South Texas.
This is one of the unexpected ways Americans are being affected by this attempted teabagger ransom. Please post how you or your family have been affected.

(37,331 posts)I live in the PNW and work in South Florida. I don't what to end up stuck in Florida after an economic collapse and if planes stop flying.
I don't think most of the US is prepared for something on the scale of the Great Depression. Only the current long-term homeless are.

(297,240 posts)too happy with the teabaggers in Congress who are responsible.
They volunteer to serve our Country and this should not be happening to them or anyone who has been hurt by the Hostage Takers.
There are millions and millions of us wondering if we'll be getting our Social Security Checks after the "Debt Ceiling" is not raised and the Government is still Shutdown. It's a stressful time for much of the country.
Thank you for the thread, brush.

(585 posts)But I know two federal workers (one relative, one close friend) who are working without pay for now. Both have mortgages and all the usual financial obligations to meet, so it's obviously very stressful for them.

(22,271 posts)with no back pay coming. I have a relative who is a coal mine inspector who is furloughed and another relative who is a USDA food inspector, also furloughed. The second is suggesting we stock up on groceries as producers won't be able to release their food without a certain percentage of their product being inspected. Not sure what specific food types he was talking about but he seemed to think if this thing goes on much longer there will be a food shortage.
