Cyclone updates from Indian broadcast news

Last edited Sun Oct 13, 2013, 04:24 AM - Edit history (1)

This is what the TV stations in Calcutta are saying this morning:

The storm is weakening as it moves inland, winds are down to 100 kph and less
The missing fishermen were found safe (not sure if that story was big internationally)
So far, deaths seem to be a question of dozens, rather than hundreds or thousands; two currently confirmed
Flooding worse than expected
About a million people are displaced

I found this link:
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/cyclone-phailin/specialcoverage/24058561.cms

I think this would probably be getting more attention if not for 1) the timing. A weekend plus the time-zone difference means less coverage, and 2) what's going on in Washington, which is sucking most of the other news oxygen out of the room. But this cyclone has been very much on my mind. I can't imagine the logistics of moving hundreds of thousands of people, most of whom don't have vehicles in which to move on their own. I just hope they have homes and crops and possessions to come back to afterwards.
