Thousands riot in Russia over migrant-blamed murder

AFP - Thousands rioted Sunday in Moscow, bashing in the doors and windows of a shopping centre and beating up security guards in a nationalist protest sparked by a murder blamed on a migrant.

The crowd, chanting "Russia for Russians", also beat down the doors of a nearby vegetable warehouse where many immigrants were working, an AFP photographer reported.

The rioters were mostly young and included extreme nationalists, witnesses quoted by the radio station Echo of Moscow said.

They threw bottles at special forces, who had arrived in 10 buses to quell the riot, detaining around 200, according to police.

The riot in Moscow's southern Biryulyovo district broke out over the killing Thursday of a 25-year-old local man who was stabbed to death as his fiancee watched.

The murderer fled the scene but was caught on surveillance cameras that suggested he could have been from Central Asia or the Caucasus.

The two accused in the attack were Moldavians.

From the nationalists' perspective, the "foreigners" didn't want to be part of the USSR after so much had been sacrificed for them and so much treasure spent on them. But they do want to send their unemployed to Russia, to take jobs away from Ivans when life, to be blunt, is still fairly brutal for the Russian lower classes.

Funny how they don't like what they perceive as invaders coming into Russia, but they feel entitled to invade and occupy smaller, neighboring nations.

Moscow anti-migrant protesters storm warehouse and clash with police

Rioters smashed shop windows, stormed a warehouse and clashed with police in a Moscow neighbourhood on Sunday night in the biggest outbreak of anti-migrant unrest in the Russian capital in three years.

Demonstrators, some chanting racist slogans, vandalised shops and other sites known for employing migrant workers in the southern Biryulyovo area after the killing of a young ethnic Russian widely blamed on a man from the Caucasus.

A video posted on YouTube showed them chanting "White Power!" as they forced their way in.

Some in the crowd, which grew to several thousand, set off from the shopping centre and stormed into a vegetable warehouse employing migrants from the Caucasus and central Asia.

Moscow authorities have closed a vegetable warehouse and detained 1,200 people after a violent Sunday protest in Moscow’s residential area of Biryulyovo.

A car with money and weapons has been found as Moscow police raided a warehouse which locals call the main attraction for migrants. On Sunday it turned into the scene of a mass anti-migrant protest, which ended with nearly 400 arrests.

A mixed crowd of nationalists and locals took to the streets in response for the fatal stabbing of a local, which is now being blamed on a migrant. They now say the killing of a 25-year-old Russian was merely the last straw.

It appeared that locals have been calling on Moscow authorities to check the warehouse and relocate it to the outside of the city. As it is just 1km from the living area, people mainly complained about late hour work activity, noise from trucks, high levels of criminality and numerous migrants who rent apartments in the area. Dozens live in each apartment at the same time. Residents say to meet a Slavic-looking man after midnight is nearly impossible.

But authorities’ reply was diplomatic and short: “[Pokrovskaya] warehouse is a strategic object of food supplies for Moscow and, hence, the transfer is impossible.”
