Is this too cynical?

I'm wondering if the republican agenda actually has to do with things other than what is obvious.

1) with the shutdown, or any action that delays paychecks to people, the one's who are winning are the banks and the loan sharks. Overdraft fees, that sort of thing.

2) perhaps the R's see that the country is in such shitty shape that they don't want to be put in a position to try and fix it, so they're trying to make the job as terrible as possible for the future democratic leaders. Perhaps they don't want to retain any power or responsibility at all and this is their way to skirt that?

and know how unpopular their positions are. How do they actually expect to gain power with this strategy? Makes no sense to me.

It is much easier to destroy from the outside than to construct from the inside.

Thanks for the thread, Duer.

Whether that's part of the plan, or a fortunate (for them) side-effect, is unknown. But I don't think it's possible to be too cynical at this point.

is completely incidental to the shutdown. It would not be at all a motivation here. The motive is, as I see it, simply to shut down the government for the sake of shutting down the government. And apparently, to the right-wingers, "government" has a specific meaning to them that has so far eluded me. Except that it seems mainly to mean "those who suck at the government teat who also vote for Democrats". They don't understand that the government also pays for National Parks and National Monuments, pays the salaries of those in the military, and a few other things that they must think just happen by magic.

I'm maybe suggesting that the PTB behind the useful idiots have a different (read: selfish, short-term) agenda.

by not getting the checks that are normally deposited. Some people will incur overdraft fees, but I doubt it will be in such huge numbers as to make bankers smile.

Again, anything banks make out of this, even if not offset by what they lose, were never in anybody's mind who thought it would be a good idea to shut down the government.
