"I know you're frustrated by what you see in your nation's capital right now. But because it's easy to get lost in or give up on the political back-and-forth, I want you to remember: this is not normal. Our government is closed for the first time in 17 years. A political party is risking default for the first time since the 1700s. This is not normal. That's why we have to put a stop to it. Not only because it's dangerous, but because it saps everyone's faith in our extraordinary system of self-government. And that hurts us all."
And, as Steve Benen reminds us, this one is on Boehner
Except for Newt Gingrich in 1995, no one has ever shut down the government as a threat to get something they want. And except for John Boehner in 2011, nobody has ever threatened to breach the debt ceiling as a threat to get something they want. That's because it's basically nuclear chicken, threatening to destroy the economy unless you get your way. It's unthinkable. [...]
Yes, it is not normal, but it is also dangerous because it does the GOP beading. It saps people's confidence in their government.

(20,219 posts)the sole property of evil people like the Kocks and Murdererock, and lazy journalism/newsfotainment/lies/irrationality/hyperbole/blatant propaganda wasn't QUITE as normalized, being deeply embedded in everyday life, as it is now.

They relish the thought that they have the power to destroy at this point. My libertarian/teanutty relatives are enjoying the current shenanigans. They're sick. Hope the country finds a way out of this mess.

(5,610 posts)shut down our corporate government and/or threatened our universal credit worthiness, America would deem them terrorists and
kill them.
When "we the people" participate in acts of civil disobedience, we are usually beaten and incarcerated. Exactly like a "tin pot
dictatorship does to its' citizens.
Since this "end of America's decent side of government (regulators and average people) shutdown and threatened economic implosion" is mainly corporate sponsored idiot "politicians". We go along.
Wake up Americans, if we are going down, let's go with a roar.

(7,549 posts)Have not obviously lived through all the crisis that faced our country but have seen my share.
Yet somehow I always had faith that we as a Country would get through them because even though we have always had widely differing opinions you could always count on that when our backs were at the wall, somehow we would bridge those disagreements and come to together for the good of our nation, no matter how uneasy and temporary such a truce would prove to be in the long run because the majority of people's 1st priority was the good of the country as a whole.
We would always fall back on the common sense wisdom of people like the Adams, Jeffersons, Frankilins, Lincolns, Kings, Roosevelts and Kennedy's of this nation.
I have no such belief any more.
I blame Ronald Wilson Reagan who fostered the notion of as long as you and your family have got what you need screw everybody and everything else because it is not about your country it is alll ABOUT YOU AND YOU ALONE.
The seeds that he sewed have now come to their inevitable fruiton.
"A Nation Divided Against Itself Cannot Stand" Lincoln "We must, indeed, all hang together or, most assuredly, we will all hang seperately." Franklin
I have no faith this time that we are going to be able to solve this, the damage has already been done. JMHO.
I stand ready to be proven wrong though and I hope I am.

We voted for Democrats because we wanted Democrats.
