South hating has been part of DU since the beginning. It has never been curbed or punished or stopped by admins in any way, even though there are lots of southerners on DU who are dyed in the wool liberals who vote for the Democratic Party in every election. I have never voted for anyone but Democrats in my 25 years of voting. Try telling that to the ones on DU who blame the south for everything bad that ever happens in the federal government.

Oh, you mean it SHOULD be beneath DU. Yeah, this is true, but in reality, not so much.

Tue Oct 15, 2013, 09:41 AM

The South has the lowest education scores and the highest rates of obesity, yes, but do you know what that is actually about? The South ALSO has the highest minority populations, and specifically the highest black populations. Obesity is a function of poverty, mostly, in the USA; non-Hispanic blacks have the highest obesity rates of any population group, the highest poverty rates, and thanks to de facto school segregation and educational underfunding the lowest educational attainment scores of any population group. To a very large extent the poverty, obesity and unhealthiness, and lower levels of educational attainment in the South are the continuing legacy of slavery and Jim Crow and systemic socioeconomic deprivation; the people who make up most of those numbers? They didn't vote for these yahoos.

But of course it's easier to blame whatever problems the South has on Southerners being subhuman troglodytes than on socioeconomic factors.

I guess I had to be today's DU punching bag. Nothing I've said previously, nothing I've done for the progressive cause, nothing else I've ever contributed has any meaning now that I've posted my little "Southern accent" comment. not unique to the south. I lived in New England for years and years, for example, and I used to come across similar there. New England is not pure ... neither are other states/regions and I've lived in many states over the years. The name teabagger did not exist then, but the mentality was the same.

What's your point? Rush Limbaugh has already talked about me...an ignorant fool like that wants to call me out, go for it. Read my op...I didn't say everyone with a southern accent is as stupid as Lindsay Graham, I'm just pointing out that most of our raging loonies in Congress happen to be from what is called the "deep south." Just sayin'.

It's all based on hate and ignorance, but espousing simple explanations for complex questions make spouting B.S. all the easier because your brain doesn't need to work as hard.

The downside is that your brain is like a muscle, if you continually use it less, atrophy sets in at a younger age.

It's a difficult position. I'm from the south. Most of my in-law family are Southern Baptists and I spend plenty of time with them...I'll be there for Thanksgiving, representing the "Liberal Puke" contingent, as I'm supposedly affectionately called. We don't talk about the fact that I work for the Democrats and make their life miserable by advocating health care for all, blah blah blah. I'm just misguided. If I just hated everyone as they do, America would be a better place. Instead, I try to help people. But I see a major batch of panties in a wad because I noted that most -- not all, but most -- of the guests on the talking head shows, hating on Obama, happen to be from the south speaking with thick Southern drawls. Ironically, none of me in-laws do. They're literally rocket scientists (two BILs work(ed) for NASA designing rockets and rocket fuels). They're otherwise very bright people...but they just can't abide this black president. I thought my OP was a bit light-hearted, but the Concern Brigade obviously saw it differently.

Again, to my Southern brothers and sisters, I'm sorry. I thought about making a similar post about "pointy-headed New England liberals" just to see if people would be similarly offended. I decided against it.

PEACE!

I've never lived anywhere but the south and your experiences mirror my own.

I didn't realize your post was supposed to be light hearted. Sometimes, intent just doesn't come across on a message board.

Yahoo, thanks for the explanation!

Have a good day, Atman!!
