Red States Discover The Pain of Paying Their Own Way

Officials in some states were not happy about paying to have the parks reopened.

Well of course not! It's the Federal Government's job to pick up the tab for running these places, we are just supposed to reap the benefits of the money that pours in from the tourism!

Of course Arizona's Jan Brewer is at the head of the line to feed at the trough:

In Arizona, Republican Gov. Jan Brewer balked at spending about $112,000 a day for a full reopening of the Grand Canyon. She said a partial reopening would be much cheaper while allowing tourists to visit and businesses to benefit.

“The daily cost difference is enormous, especially without assurances that Arizona will be reimbursed,” said Andrew Wilder, a spokesman for Brewer.

. . .

“Wyoming cannot bail out the federal government and we cannot use state money to do the work of the federal government,” Mead spokesman Renny MacKay said.

4. Again shows why some selective boycotts could help return the country to control "by the people"...

A few months of boycott of Yellowstone and suddenly there would be plenty of room to let wolves and bison roam.
A month of no one buying gas from BP and they'd be happy to settle with everyone in the gulf and finish the clean up in record time.
One month of not buying a (insert your least favorite car company here) and suddenly there would be affordable hybrids all around.
A month of no walmart and suddenly the could afford healthcare and a living wage for all their employees.
If only...

I would love to see California offer to pay to re-open as many parks as possible in red states with the caveat that California gets to put what they want to about their state on the sign:

"Welcome to the Grand Canyon sponsored during the shut down by California, proving that voting Democratic makes money."

"Welcome to Yellowstone, brought to you temporarily by California, where marriage is for everyone and the economy is doing great."

Arizona would be a "blue" state if you deduct the "snowbird" vote. There are an estimated 300,000 snowbirds arrive in the state of Arizona by election time. President Obama lost Arizona by just over 200,000 popular votes. Do the age/demographic math here and presto: state turns blue. My home is there, most people I have worked with warned me and the reasonable masses of the "radical right wing dipshit" that would, given the opportunity, preach his/her gospel of garbage.
The counties with the most exceptional "red" vote percentages are the snowbird destinations. Some others, (I hope I'll be forgiven for this label) are hopelessly redneck counties with no radio stations on the local dial that don't blather right-wing bullshit at an impoverished populace all day and night. Sparse population areas with small total counts.
Most Arizonan's I know my age group and younger are absolutely ashamed at the extreme right-wing turn Arizona politics has taken. Demographics and disgust with right wing policy blunders might just turn this around in 2014 and 2016.

13. Are snowbirds only registered in Arizona?

because I suppose they're not voting in their summer states then? I've noticed the mountain states neighboring AZ have turned bluer.

14. My parents stayed registered in Arizona

in anticipation of arrival at Quartzsite at election time, and before the big swap meets there. I've heard there are some who register two states, vote absentee in one and in person at another. I don't know, just what I've read, and wonder if there is any mechanism in place to prevent that?
It is still demographics. "R" voters are largely retirees, just as Fox News rates very low in the under-55 sampling. Fox news ratings are high for only one reason: Retirees that watch nothing else all damn day! (My DAD!) Drives my mom crazy. She'll switch it to classic movies. And my stupid dad clicks the damn thing back to Fox. Working folks watch an hour of MSNBC or CNN cant hold a ratings-candle to that.
Arizona is so full of blue-hairs all winter long, that disappear back home in summer. It is the "snowbird" counties that had the highest percentage of Romney voters, Quartzsite alone has only a few hundred year-round residents, yet over 150,000 winter visitors that fill the RV parks and homes abandoned all the rest of the year.
Here's my prediction. 2014 might just be surprising especially after current events, but 2016 will be definitely a "blue landslide". The VA has taken note how the U.S. is quickly running out of WWII veterans--- exactly who "R" campaigns for! Though some echo's of grandpa's warnings about "them damn socialists" will continue to resonate through some younger folks, many recognize the old battle cry of calling practically any social program "socialism" as false and paranoid.
Their base is dying off. The younger snowbirds will still have some strong "R" showing for some time. But polls of young folks, everywhere show their "R" percentages as very, very low-- around 11 percent. Montana, Wyoming, and "redneck counties" in Arizona will stay "red". But, much like some other largely "red" states in the country, the urban areas don't fall for that garbage so easily.
