South Dakota celebrates Native American Day

Monday, most of the country will be celebrating Columbus Day, but in South Dakota it's Native American Day.

In 1989 the South Dakota Legislature unanimously passed legislation proposed by Governor George Mickelson to change Columbus Day to Native American Day. California and Tennessee also celebrate a Native American Day but theirs is at the end of September. South Dakota is the only state that celebrates Native American Day on Columbus Day.

Weather permitting the Crazy Horse memorial has planned a mountain blast and a free buffalo stew luncheon. Other activities and programs include Native American singers, dancers, artists and storytellers, the South Dakota Symphony's Lakota Music Project and an educational program.

In honor of the celebration, Mount Marty College will present A Very Beautiful Day which is an oral Native American presentation including original musical stories. The event will take place from 7:00 until 8:30 on Thursday at Marian Auditorium on the MMC campus. It is free and open to the public

I love our Native Americans. We have taken so much from them and given very little back.
