Veteran Privilege needs to end

Why does is matter so much that this group gets to see a memorial?

Why are they allowed to tear down fences and throw them at the White House, assault police and destroy public property with impunity?

News of other citizens cut off from real government services has been drowned out by these guys and their temper tantrums.

They are treated like a separate class of citizen that is one step up from everyone else, and it needs to stop.

No more special treatment.

First, the solution isn't to treat veterans as badly as we treat others, the solution is to treat others as well as veterans.

Second, we don't treat veterans particularly well.

Third, many in that group weren't veterans and those who were did not represent most veterans.

Fourth, it was immensely important that nothing resembling abuse take place on Sunday with that group of traitors in DC.

I'm very proud of how we handled the group with so much restraint, we made them look even more foolish.

Apologies if you were being sarcastic but you never know.

They aren't above the law. But they are a special class of people after a fashion. As others have noted they do run the risk of giving their lives for us.

"I've always been amazed that the very people forced to live in the worst parts of town, go to the worst schools, and who have it the hardest are always the first to step up, to defend that very system. They serve so that we don't have to. They offer to give up their lives so that we can be free. It is remarkably their gift to us. And all they ask for in return is that we never send them into harm's way unless it's absolutely necessary. Will they ever trust us again?" - Michael Moore, Fahrenheit 9/11

As for the REAL Vets there, they were very uset by the rabble rousers (led by Cruz and Palin) who hijacked their event, which was to peacfully protest the closing of the memorials.

there is a huge nation wide effort to get as many WWII vets to see the WWII monument before they all die.

So thousands of old and frail vets have been planning for months to fly to DC to see "their" monument. Can't you see how preventing them is going to cause a fuss?

This would be the wingnut mob of jingoistic FAKE patriotism as opposed to the real thing. Chickenhawks. I joined the VFW from nostalgia for a figment of a bond with other veterans, but found a nest of mostly wingnuts.

Tours are rescheduled all the time. If the Rethugs cut off the cash to operate *everything* it's their characteristic hypocrisy to distract with BAITING. If social services and national security are closed down, what exactly is essential about monuments. Not a question. Monuments (and national parks) are our china closets of knickknacks. Who gets to make a list of exceptions to what is subject to the Rethug shutdown.

I always aknowledge that the service has a fair amonut of shitbirds, it is after all a product of this country and reflects its problems, flaws and mitakes. But it also is a force that has done immeasurable good. Want to complain about where we kill, or die? Then look in the mirror because the government we as Americans elect decides where Jane or Johny will spend our blood and treasure.

Tue Oct 15, 2013, 04:45 PM

First of all, any "self-respecting" Veteran would have never been within 500 yards of those nutbags in DC....and NO Veteran I know would have stood there while the flag of an enemy state of our nation was waved about. People make a spurious assumption that all (or most) Veterans are knuckle-dragging "Tea-bagging" nut jobs, but having served with a bunch over half a life-time, I can tell you that is not the case.

Second - you do realize that you have 18 year old kids working 18 hour days on the flight-deck of an Aircraft Carrier, being held responsible for $20M aircraft, and earning wages that put them in competition with fast food workers. I've seen guys who have busted their asses, only to go home and have to apply for Food Stamps to feed their families. I've seen guys get blown over the side of a carrier by a jet blast from a S3, get fished out of the water, and go back to work.

That "special privilege" crap is a bunch of horseshit. What we should be asking is why we don't honor all American workers, and why we don't fight for "their" health care and benefits with the same fervor we do for the veteran.

The veterans aren't the problem, Blaming them, or claiming they have some "special privilege" is like a $40K a year Tea-bagger blaming America's problems on their fellow American who is making $42K a year.
