I am glad to see it happening now.

We needed the Democrats of years past.

and unity will come to an end in DC and here. Icky grand bargain stuff--trading chained CPI for increased spending on other social/infrastructure programs, etc.

The President took one position when the recovery was not yet happening and we were still on a real precipice for another Great Depression.

Those proposals are no longer on the table.

The Democrats will not want to agree any deal, hoping to leverage it for the 2014 election.

I am more optimistic than I have been in a long time.

10. We shouldn't get too excited, imo. They don't have the threat of default, but they do

11. 1st Time Poster-Spoke to a staffer in my (R) Senator's Office
Tue Oct 15, 2013, 12:29 PM

Just spoke to a staffer in (R) Mark Udall's office about 15 minutes ago to express my strong dissatisfaction about the Republican position of shutting down the government and their stance on defunding the ACA. Staffer (Lucas) tried to "school" me on the horrors of "Obamacare". I told him of my wife's and my 54 combined years of military service and he started lecturing me about how my wife and I swore to uphold the constitution. I stopped him there and reminded him that Mark Udall also swore to uphold the constitution which also means recognizing and supporting the laws of our nation. Then I walked him down the path of the ACA being a law and the senator has an obligation to uphold this law and how laws are repealed under proper order. then i asked him if repealing the ACA involves shutting down the government and I was aghast when he stated "yes." When I called him on this, he said I was putting words in his mouth. AGAIN, the staffer said that their actions in shutting down the government is how they are attempting to repeal the ACA! Straight from the horses mouth. I gave him a few more choice words about the Republican tactic and then called the offices of my Democratic representatives to urge them to stand their ground.

This is my first post but I've been lurking, enjoying and agreeing with DU since I was a young sergeant. Thank you DU for the clarity.

I meant to state Doug Lamborn. I was in a fit of emotion after getting off the line. After being lectured about my oath of upholding the Constitution. I never forget.

He's backed the repubs every time up to now in this fiasco. Must be reading the polls and knows which side is winning.

8. Key paragraph from your link:

At the GOP leadership presser today, at which leaders introduced their latest plan, John Boehner notably did not rule out a House vote on the emerging Senate compromise. So one possible endgame here could be that Boehner might make one last, heroic stand for the Tea Party, perhaps passing the new House bill, which will promptly be rejected by the Senate. Then, having shown a willingness to take us right up to the brink of catastrophe, Boehner might then cave to the inevitable need to let something reopening the government and lifting the debt limit pass (the Senate compromise, or a version of it that includes a face-saver for Republicans) with a lot of Democratic votes, making the Tea Partiers very, very, very angry, and suffering the consequences.
That’s one way this could unfold, anyway.

Let's hope they hold.
