What would happen if Boehner resigned as speaker?

Chaos? Would the Republicans immediately put Cantor in? Would there be a split among republicans or would King and the rest of the so called "moderates" fall in line with the Ted Cruz wing officially taking over?

Boner loves him that gavel -- if he wasn't so addicted to his position of power, he'd have allowed a clean CR to come to a vote long ago, or wouldn't have reneged on his deal with Reid (CR and debt-limit increase in exchange for continuation of the sequester) under Tea-liban pressure in the first place.

that he cracked under pressure, or saw that he was about to be overthrown anyway, and bailed out. How would it play out?

Boehner is not a moderate being held hostage by an extreme element of his own party, Boehner is part of that extreme element. If he wasn't he would have allowed for a clean CR bill to be voted on and it would have passed with a few moderate Republican's signing on and ever Democrat voting for it. Boner's a terrorist just like the rest of um.

4. I'm not suggesting he's a "moderate" at all

I'm just wondering how it would play out if he bailed at this point. And I'm not asking how the "crisis" would play out, just how the power vacuum would be filled.

7. Correct. A last minute rules change means Boehner can not bring a clean CR to vote if he wanted to.

Only the Majority Leader can do that. And the Majority Leader is Eric Cantor.

As far as I know Boehner can bring a clean debt ceiling vote. Only the budget has been reserved for the Republican Party.
