112. I adopted a puppy...
Wed Oct 16, 2013, 05:37 AM
Oct 2013

Of all places, at a Petsmart when the local Humane Society was there. She was about 4 months old. I named her Chelsea. She was a mix of Border Collie and Australian Shepperd.

Eighteen months ago, at the age of 17, we had to let her go and cross the Rainbow Bridge. She grew up with my kids, so she was like another child to me. It was hard to let her go, but it was time. She had a great life and now, I believe, she is is somewhere running and playing with her two best buddies who left before she did.

When I saw the video, I thought of her.

Then I thought....PUPPIES!!! Nothing sweeter than puppies. Especially when they get a forever home. My sweetie was as smart as they come.....yet was severely lacking in the common sense department. But we all loved her so very much.

We now have two kitties I adopted from the local animal shelter. I've had them for two years. She got to know them for a short time and let them play with her tail and wagged it as much as her energy allowed. It proved to be a short friendship.

Today, please don't ask me who is in charge! I believe it is me. But, I'm pretty sure I'm wrong about that. They rule home and hearth. We are, in fact, their servants. They know EXACTLY when it is dinner time.

HOW DO THEY KNOW THAT? 6am and 6pm on the dot....we are summoned to put down the wet food!! Sheesh!!! They have hard cat food out ALL THE TIIME!! But, if they still insist that we follow their schedule.

We are in fact, slaves to the felines.

They bring us nothing but joy. I am sorry for your loss. A BC/Aussie mix would be a tremendous dog.

Did you notice how your dog seemed to regret that her kids grew up on her? Our BC lights up whenever he interacts with a child. The two are inseparable and my daughters run both in dog agility. The Aussie and my oldest daughter are like twins. My oldest goes off to college in August, and I wonder how the Aussie will take it.

121. My hubbie bought me the cutest book years ago
Wed Oct 16, 2013, 08:52 AM
Oct 2013

It was almost like a child's picture book. Each page had a dog with a caption under it.

One showed a sad-sack looking dog. Below it, the caption read, "Off to college? Must be dead."

When they would come home during a break, she wiggled and whined with so much happiness I thought she would hurt herself....or break any furniture closeby.

When my son was deploying to Iraq, he had an overnight stop at Richmond. So we took her and jumped into the car for a three hour drive to see him at the airport, even though we only had an hour there with him. He acted "all business" until we told him she was in the car. He practically ran to the parking lot to see her. Wish I had brought a camera to grab a pic of the two of them in a death lock of a hug. Brought tears to my eyes. They hadn't seen each other in almost a year and you would have thought they were long lost twins finally reunited.

Wow, what a memory. I hadn't thought about this in years. Thanks for triggering that memory.

I started out more as a cat lover and indifferent to dogs. But I have done a total change around. Whenever I had complained about relationships or friendship or even loyalty in a work situation. I would hear people say, 'If you want unconditional love - get a dog" "If you want a true friend who will stand beside you no matter what - get a dog" - "If you want loyalty - get a dog" --- I finally took them up on that advice and they were right.

As a kid we had the most wonderful cat. His name was Ferdinand after the bull in the children's story, but we called him Fuzz. He was smart and social as all get out. We had dogs too, but none quite as wonderful as Fuzz the cat.

I got my first dog in my early twenties and from then on I was a dedicated dog person. Teladma lived until she was 14, then I got Tucker who lived until she was 19 and a few years after that I got Little-Dog who just died last month. I miss her terribly.

Time for a new pup.

They have a standard poodle and a striped cat. On warm days, I have seen the cat and dog snoozing together on the porch. I have also seen the poodle chase the cat. And if another dog chases the cat, the poodle will chase the dog away. The dog's attitude seems to be, "That is MY cat. I am allowed the chase the cat, and I ALONE. If you chase the cat, I will chase you."

They're clearly not chows, who'd never allow such misbehavior. My chows were always good citizens (in my view) but wouldn't tolerate any challenges to their rule. Well, except from me, and that never was an issue. I taught them to drop food in my hand on command even when they were hungry, and they'd refuse to eat anything I was looking at.

But then I'm not a cat either... only catty!

after many years of joy. I hate to admit it, but the tuxedo, Veto, was a Republican. He was always "me first" and/or "everything is mine, mine, mine." This applied to food, attention, toys, sleeping arrangements, etc. Joey, the Coon, was the sweetest pacifist around, so got taken advantage of constantly. I miss them both though, even the Republican.

My little tortie is always stealing my white shepherd/husky mix's bed. The dog then comes to me with The Look and directs my attention to the thief. So I have to make the cat move..... The cat does not lack for sleeping quarters. She goes anywhere and everywhere. Once I went down to the basement for something or other and found her in a basket of mending. Other times I find her on a closet floor, on the guest room bed, on a stack of shopping bags by the entry way.... in a box of magazines in the study.... So you know, she does it just to piss off the dog.

The dog doesn't dare take the bed back from the cat. They DO share, if the cat allows her room. The dog tolerates the cat grooming her; she tolerates way too much. She will finally give a sharp bark and lunge when the cat pushes her too far with teeth and claws; not often, but sudden and loud enough to back the cat down.

I live in a 1-room schoolhouse with 4 dogs and 2 cats and we all get along pretty well, if not piled up on each other once in awhile. Then there's the wildlife that creeps in and out - a snakeskin draped across the vines over my front door, the bats in the belfry ( 5 of them, way cool ) , birds, bee's nest in the wall, and now it's spider season - for coming in to winter over. But that's ok, it's all good.
