McDonald's offers free breakfast to students on test day

I am, unsurprisingly, rather conflicted about this.

McDonald's offers free breakfast to some students on TCAP test day

McDonald's restaurants in Colorado have planned a treat for students in the third through fifth grade on Tuesday: free breakfast.

Students 11 and younger accompanied by a parent may grab their a free Egg McMuffin and milk or orange juice 6 to 9 am Tuesday at any McDonald's restaurant. There are no substitutions.

McDonald’s timed the giveaway so students would have breakfast the day they take Transitional Colorado Assessment Program test, which replaces CSAPs this year.

While TCAP tests is given on a variety of dates for different age groups in the spring, March 6 captured the most students in the state.

On one hand, McDonald's food. On the other, free breakfast for a kiddo. On the third hand, 300 calories and 12 grams of fat. On the fourth, 18 grams of protein and some orange juice.... you get the idea.

In 1979 I was volunteering during the Spring (Easter Weekend) Flood in Jackson, Mississippi. I filled sandbags and worked alongside prisoners from Parchman (the State Pen) to save the Fortification Street Levee. I worked waist deep in water and mud building a levee around a power sub station near the fair grounds. in the early hours of the morning. I was thankful for the baloney and mustard sandwich distributed to volunteers by the Red Cross. I worked with them also setting up shelters for folks that were flooded out of their homes in low lying neighborhoods near the river. Many of these were rather high end homes (not that it matters, rich folks need shelter too )

Several months later I was at my cousin's house and one of his friends was talking about her experience. She lived in one of those high end areas. Apparently her home was not flooded, but her neighborhood had been isolated by the flood waters and lost power for some time which was accompanied be food spoilage etc. The Red Cross brought in some aid. She was complaining (shrieking) that that so and so from the so and so Red Cross had given her daughter a doughnut - "feeding that poison to my child!"

When I had been working on down on the levee I was sent with a group of prison volunteers to shore up a portion way down the line in the black of night. While working there I slipped and found myself sliding toward the water. When some of the guys helped pull me out I didn't stop to ask what they were in for. Th ey were some of the greatest guys I met during that experience.

Everybody has their own agenda. Those guys may have been out there to get time off their sentences, but they were there when I needed them. The Red Cross has had troubles of their own, but they were there. McDonalds' may be the devil, and doing this for public relations, but they are feeding kids.

My anacronym challenged self would appreciate some clarification

That isn't going to happen anytime soon. Even the school breakfast and lunch programs are being cut, which weren't much healthier (if at all) than McD's.

So, for one day...good job McD's.

Hey, I love Egg McMuffins, but never in my wildest perversity would I call them "healthy."

Students need a breakfast to function.

China sends their best and brightest students in Math and Engineering to College FOR FREE.

Our cut-throat Crony-Capitalism will not allow for education or advancement unless someone in Washington makes a buck along the way.

Fortunately, the closest one is 25 miles away.... by boat.

But when I do get over there, I can rarely go by without getting a 99 cent cheeseburger or chicken sandwich and a sweet tea (and sometimes some fries and very occasionally a Big Mac).

So, I am the wrong person to comment on this.

Those frozen breakfast sandwiches have enough salt to drive your BP up.
I can't eat 'em.

read that as "when I am in an absolute pinch time-wise". I WILL stop by and get a mocha frappe or unsweetened iced tea if I'm out and about and want a cold treat.

I bought a Happy Meal a few weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised. Along with my burger, there were only a small handful of fries (smaller than their 'small' bag they used to use - the new box was about 1.5" square). The meal also now includes a serving of apple slices (no caramel sauce).
