McConnell - Tough shit...

Last edited Thu Oct 17, 2013, 09:29 AM - Edit history (2)

A provision in the Federal funding bill includes $2.918 billion in funding for a dam in Kentucky. He's walking away from this debacle with lots of your tax dollars for a project that's over budget, and won't be completed until 2024.

And here's a particularly interesting reply in that thread:

25. McConnell Re-election tactic

If anyone understands Kentucky politics, its McConnell. And anyone that know McConnell's successful strategy to win in Ky, it's to win every county west of i65. (west of Louisville). Almost all of the cities are blue in Ky, but Paducah. And McConnell has dumped tons of money into the area via ear marks and the DOE's Gaseous Diffusion plant over the years. Paducah is in the pocket of McConnell and this sound like more of the same tactic. If Paducah can be flipped blue, McConnell will lose re-election. So to see McConnell sneak in a $2 Billion appropriation to Paducah should not be a surprise. He must be desperate.

whether or not they're done in McConnell's district.

What, precisely, makes you so certain this thing is a "debacle", other than it's over budget? Many large public works projects come in over budget. That's not great, but it doesn't make them "debacles".

The US Army Corps of Engineers seems to think this is worthwhile endeavor:

http://www.lrl.usace.army.mil/Missions/CivilWorks/Navigation/LocksandDams/OlmstedLocksandDam.aspx

The Locks and Dam 52 and 53 Replacement Project, known as the Olmsted Locks and Dam, is under construction between Illinois and Kentucky about 17 miles upstream from the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers. The locks are complete and work on the dam continues. Olmsted will replace locks and dams 53 and 52 and greatly reduce tow and barge delays through the busiest stretch of river in America's inland waterways.

And one may have opinions about the judgment concerning attaching this to the Gov. funding bill.

But adequate infrastructure spending is a necessity that has been long lacking in the federal budget.

(The unnecessary use of 'bitches' (which is purely your decision) offends many DUers. You survived a jury alert on this 3-3:

ALERTER'S COMMENTS:

Uses the sexist term "bitch" gratuitously. It is not the headline of the linked article. Juries need to make clear that insulting, sexist terms violate community standards and TOS. The poster could easily make his point without using language insulting to many women.

You served on a randomly-selected Jury of DU members which reviewed this post. The review was completed at Thu Oct 17, 2013, 05:22 AM, and the Jury voted 3-3 to LEAVE IT.

Juror #1 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given
Juror #2 voted to HIDE IT and said: Have the OP repost minus " bitch".
Juror #3 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: Try asking for an edit before alerting?
Juror #4 voted to HIDE IT and said: No explanation given
Juror #5 voted to HIDE IT and said: Try again with proper headline and less insults.
Juror #6 voted to LEAVE IT ALONE and said: No explanation given

(I wasn't a juror or the alerter, but the results were posted elsewhere). You can see that the 3 jurors who left a comment can see the problem with the word.)

Not the alerter or on the jury; just a woman who appreciates it when the previous word isn't aimed at a man as an insult.

I know it is "common vernacular" and I appreciate you helping to change that.

THANK YOU!!!
