I'm hearing today more talking heads talking about the demise of the Tea Party. I'm hearing McConnell & McCain - saying - no more government shutdowns. I'm hearing that John Boehner's position as Speaker has been strengthened and solidified. I'm hearing that nobody won. I'm hearing that the Repugs actually did extract some blood from this deal in that we compromised with the Sequester numbers. I'm hearing Repugs talking about coming out of this stronger and maybe rid of the Tea Party.
A few days ago - we were talking about the complete death of the Repug Party. I'm just wondering if this compromise that Reid and McConnell came up with to end this - didn't in fact help the Repugs?
If they truly have turned the American People south on the Tea Party - the Repugs are rid of a big albatross that was hanging them and causing rifts within their Party. Now with the help of the President and the Dems holding firm on this - it appears that in a round about way they helped the Repug Party and that they in fact will not die - they will be around - only to rise again.
Any thoughts on this? Am I reading too much into this day of post-mortems? Will Boehner come out of this stronger than he was going in? Is Little Luke right?

(21,946 posts)The shut down will hurt all of them because they all made it happen, plus almost took the country into a devastating default.
For your other question, Little Luke is very rarely right, except for his politics.

(1,941 posts)They're often not telling you about the way things are but the way they want things to be. Our belief makes it so. If we are told that Miley Cirrhosis is the most interesting thing in music and we give her the most attention out of any working artist, that suggestion becomes reality.
It's all salesmanship and bullshit.

I think Boehner may indeed have helped himself among the more extreme members of his party.
But it is those members that have been preventing Boehner from negotiating deals with the Democrats
in the past, so maybe deals become more likely now.

(2,679 posts)The old repubs are scared hence the "never gonna do that again," comments. The only thing Boehner strong in is cementing his name down into one of the worst Speakers EVER.
And Little Luke gets excited when helicopters fly by and he is friends with Boehner.
But the little minions that feed on the right-wing mega noise machine for information will buy this hook line and sink.

(11,785 posts)I'm seeing two possibilities: Boehner personally espouses the Tea Party craziness, and that's why he went along with it, or Boehner's unable to control the Tea Party craziness, and had little choice/influence over events. The first option makes him look out of touch with reality, and the second makes him look weak. Neither possibility makes him look more credible or influential than he was before this mess started.
