into accepting the New World Order. OK, which one of you scoundrels let the cat out of the bag on our new secret plan?
The senior managing editor for Health News at the Fox News Channel warned on Thursday that AMCs hit Zombie television series The
Walking Dead was not only hurting American society, it was inspiring viewers to participate in this new world order.
Hate me all you want, or call me paranoid and misinformed, but there is one common theme that is pervasive in American pop culture today: violence, Dr. Manny Alvarez wrote in a column on the Fox News website. Even more specifically, zombie violence. The idea of a zombie-infested world inspires fantasies of monsters possessed by an uncontrollable rage to kill, and viewers get a thrill imagining what it would be like to participate in this new world order.

(12,618 posts)TV violence bad.
Real world violence in which you illegally invade another country and massacre hundreds of thousands of people and commit acts of torture and war crimes good.

Maybe I'm just old but if TWD is some kind of sinister propaganda I'm totally missing it. It just seems like relatively harmless entertainment not to be enjoyed while eating dinner.

(17,865 posts)characters, Daryl, is a dyed in the wool good ol' boy with a racist, violent brother that he loved but did not agree with. Sounds like family values to me. A father and two daughters are shown studying the Bible and praying together. More family values. A man who takes his responsibilities to his wife and children seriously. More family values. A woman who tries to mediate between two groups engaged in violence instead of just killing the leader of one of them. A very Christian thing to do. A man who took the church van around and picked up folks in need once the outbreak started and had a very personal relationship with God that gave him comfort even as he died. The Christians are not shown as wackos but caring individuals trying to survive while maintaining their humanity.
It is a great show.

(58,179 posts)I adore the show, but I am not at all blind to the rampaging gun-porn aspect of it.
Fox is Derp.

(1,315 posts)But, no it is far from gun porn, it is cringe worthy to anyone with a modicum of weapons awareness, I imagine Doctors, Nurses and MedTechs watching "House" or "E.R." spend less time rolling thier eyes or outright laughing at the ridiculousness of the guns and how they are handled on this show. I like the show, BECAUSE it would be very boring to watch a squared away fireteam, or even a well protected collective get through the zombie holocaust.

(15,388 posts)Which is partially responsible for Romero's characterization of zombies, which in turn inspires, "The Dead Walk," (I know that's not it - it just pisses off the hard-core fans) so we're trying again.

(2,431 posts)Zombies in our culture are a metaphor for people you cannot reason with... and a lame-ass, solves-nothing, method of dealing with those people. Violence does not solve any problem. Violence delays a problem; it tables the issue -- and it will come up again and again until it is dealt with for real.
Zombie-culture is another Hunger Games-style conditioning to get everyone cool with this insane, dog-eat-dog, Randian world that assholes like Paul Ryan are pushing on us. It is depicted as inevitable rather than preventable. I refuse to accept that it is not preventable.

(10,960 posts)That doesn't make me dislike it. It's just a made-up story. But the world of Walking Dead is a Republican wet dream where you are free to gun down "the other."

To be honest, I'm getting pretty tired of the zombie meme myself, by only bored, scared is ridiculous.

(7,904 posts)people like zombies simply because of the simplicity they allow as an antagonist. There is no need to address the "gentle giant" or poor misunderstood good guy in an ugly body. They are mindless brutes that can not be brought back therefor allowing the story teller to concentrate on pure fear and the interactions amongst the human characters.
