That I volunteered today at Fort Miley VA hospital in San Francisco. I ran into some pretty relieved veterans, most of whom rely on that Disability check once a month. Some are 100% disabled (and get a full check) while others are 75%, 50% and each were relieved that their government was back to work. I think on November 1st, I might bring in some of my pumpkin spice sugar cookies to pass out with the Coffee.

(20,776 posts)The IMVU DU chat room has not been used much. Should I withdraw it? No one seems to want to go there now.

(20,776 posts)Especially after hearing the news the President announced.. They always have the TVs tuned to either CNN.. or that channel where
they have those Pawn broker guys..(what is that?)
So I am sure they already knew the government was going back to work.

(15,545 posts)a quality we need more of in this country. Good for you! I've done a goodly share of volunteer work in my life and I'm a firm believer in volunteering for a worthy cause. You get so much more back than you give, don't you???
AsahinaKimi
(20,776 posts)I don't mind running after things that are needed. The Volunteers do a lot, from directing people at information to serving cups of coffee to those who can not afford it... I think the coffee at the little Coffee Cart is like $1.50 for a small cup and 2.50 for the larger one, but our coffee is free.. they just have to see the coffee cart, and they know its free, including a couple of cookies.

(20,776 posts)And volunteering is not a big deal. Anyone can do if they have the time and the patience. I know sometimes people get upset when things don't go well there, and you gotta feel for these guys.. with constant problems, so pitching in seems the right thing to do.

(20,776 posts)In the Cafeteria they have large screen TV that is always tuned to CNN. A lot of people go there to eat and watch the News. I was there myself, (Had a lovely leg of chicken, and some macaroni salad with a bottle of OJ.) and watched much of what was going on during the lunch period... before heading back up to the second floor.
Its funny, one time a visitor changed the station to FOX NEWS, and about a dozen VETS shouted... TURN IT BACK, DAMN IT!!!
You never seen someone move so fast to turn the channel back in your life!
freshwest
(53,661 posts)That was overwhelming and repeated. Plus they told her:
'You're an Idiot!'
It made me feel better about the vet protest. The rightwing had spun it blame Obama.
We have many disabled vets where I live, and the area is disability friendly. Sidewalk ramps, parking, and places to live.
Some are terribly injured. We love them all.
