Our crack (NYS) State Legislature at work...

The New York State legislature has been unable to complete redistricting (Federal or State) much less develop a non-partisan process for the future. But, never fear, they're dealing with the important issues...

from the Albany Times-Union:

Tales of actual legislation, or: Fire bad!

It’s probably happened to you: You’re standing in someone’s living room staring at a blazing fire through a glass fireplace door. Curious, you crouch down and press your palm against the glass — egads! You pull your red and blistered hand away, stunned by the realization that the glass is several hundred degrees fahrenheit.

Your first thought: Why didn’t someone warn you that a piece of glass only inches away from the flame would be really hot? How could New York State government allow something like this to happen?

Luckily, Assemblyman Jeff Dinowitz, D-Riverdale, and Sen. Lee Zeldin, R-Suffolk County, have introduced a bill to require fireplace manufacturers to affix a prominent warning that fireplace glass can get dangerously hot. The language:

Standards for factory manufactured fireplaces and fireplace enclosures which have glass viewing panels requiring that every such fireplace and enclosure, sold or installed after the effective date of this subdivision, shall have affixed to the glass panels thereof, a conspicuous orange warning label advising the consumer of the grave risk of serious burns posed by touching such glass panels when a fireplace is operating. No such warning label shall be removed from the glass of a fireplace or fireplace enclosure by any person; provided, however, that when such a fireplace or fireplace enclosure is installed in, an owner occupied dwelling, such warning may be removed by the owner who occupies such dwelling. Any person who violates the standards established pursuant to this subdivision shall be liable for a civil penalty not to exceed two hundred fifty dollars.
