Breaking: G8 Moved Out of Chicago

In a move that makes a mockery of American democracy—but also points to the growing clout of the Occupy movement—the White House has moved the site of the upcoming G-8 economic summit from Chicago to the presidential retreat at Camp David in Maryland. Chicago’s current mayor, Rahm Emanuel, served as President Barack Obama’s first chief of staff until 2010.

Because it attracts protesters, the G8 has “been increasingly taken away from anywhere we can get near,” Mike Dolan, a principal organizer of protests at the 1999 World Trade Organization conference that spawned The Battle of Seattle, told the New York Times in 2004. That year, the G8 was held on remote Sea Island, Georgia.

From Huffington Post:

It’s an unusually late location change for such a large international summit. The White House gave no immediate reason for the shift, saying only in a statement that Obama is inviting his fellow G-8 leaders to Camp David to “facilitate a free-flowing discussion.”

The G-8 meeting will be held May 18-19. The White House says Obama still plans to host the NATO summit in Chicago on May 20-21.

The White House announced last summer that Obama would hold both summits in his hometown of Chicago.

because they're finally catching a clue as to how thoroughly they're hated by the people who are finally starting to put the big picture together about why we are all getting poorer every single day.

This angers me in so many ways...

Insulating yourselves from the pain and suffering they create is such a cowardly act, it's disgusting.

I know a lot of people will be upset about not being able to protest the G8 up close, but since my very excited plans to go to Chicago for the G8 are unraveling, it is a bittersweet announcement for me.

Occupy has clout. Why the offiicials are afraid of unarmed, peaceful protesters ,yet allowed teabaggers to bring guns right outside an Obama event baffles me still. But I am glad to see we are shaking things up.

They know occupy is growing. They know the people are rising at last and they are afraid of them. Not afraid that we will harm them physically so much as afraid that everyone will wake up. Look at all the laws they recently enacted to keep us from protesting.

The Tea Partiers are crazy, but cowards. They may flash their automatic weapons, but they'd never have the guts to pull the triggers. And they are a minor pinprick, a bunch of noisy blowhards. Furthermore, they don't attack the basic underpinnings of society.

OWS does attack such underpinnings. They are protesting about truths that the people in power have long thought hidden, or at least unassailable. And they are in much greater quantity. Hence, they scare the Powers a lot more than a few yahoos with teabags hanging off their hats.

But I would rather not give the opportunity to the OWS opposition to start some stuff and blame it on the OWS movement.

So I guess this means that while the G8 meets at Camp David, the "Free Speech Zone" gets to be located in Chicago.

Do I have that correct?
