U.S. Chamber of Commerce president Tom Donahue said something Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, could work on was learning how to 'sit down and shut up' after the firebrand conservative led a Republican effort to defund President Barack Obama's signature health care law resulting in a 16-day federal government shutdown and near credit default.
"He has his right as a member of the Senate to get out and push the things he supports or resist the things he doesn't support and we're going to try to work with him wherever we can," Donahue said during an event hosted by the Christian Science Monitor.
A reporter said, "people are assuming that the business community would kind of like him to sit down and shut up," Donahue replied, "Well, that might be one thing we could work on."

(3,915 posts)Really, there is enough red meat to comment on in the R's behaviors. Do we really care what the asshole looks like? And is there something wrong with pumping gas (or any other service job)?
Sigh.

(21,056 posts)We all look different from one another, and some of us aren't gorgeous politicians like Paul Ryan or Barack Obama, and just because one of theirs isn't the most attractive creature, doesn't mean we should not only mention their looks but say they should be doing a low-paying job because they're not attractive. It's really uncalled for.
We're collectively much better than the GOPers.

(8,175 posts)I was wondering yesterday who he reminds me of, physically, and discovered it was Bill O'Reilly...but not enough to say they were twins. Today I saw a picture of him on Chris Hayes show, and it dawned on me, he looks just like a cross between O'Reilly and Pee-Wee Herman.
Now I see I'm not the only one who sees the similarity to Herman. But seriously...look at photos of him and O'Reilly...lots of similarities. Just add the Pee-wee touch and it's perfect.

Oddly, while Donohue casts himself as the voice of business, he has never worked for a corporation or any kind of for-profit concernonly for trade associations, nonprofits, and the federal government. The son of a production manager at the American Can Company, he was born in Brooklyn and raised on Long Island. After high school, he attended St. Johns and Adelphi universities, eventually earning an MBA. Early jobs included a stint as a fund-raiser for the Boy Scouts of America and, later, an aide to legendary disabled-persons rights activist Henry Viscardi, founder of the National Center for Disability Services. In a 1998 interview with Newsday, Viscardi recounted how Donohue made his ambition clear from the start. I sat him down across the desk from me and asked what job he wanted, said Viscardi. He said, I want your job. Thats Tom Donohue for you.
