This song means as much to me now as it did 40 years ago...
(Helen Reddy and Ray Burton)
I am woman, hear me roar
In numbers too big to ignore
And I know too much to go back an' pretend
'Cause I've heard it all before
And I've been down there on the floor
No one's ever gonna keep me down again
Oh yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can do anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
You can bend but never break me
'Cause it only serves to make me
More determined to achieve my final goal
And I come back even stronger
Not a novice any longer
'Cause you've deepened the conviction in my soul
Oh, yes, I am wise
But it's wisdom born of pain
Yes, I've paid the price
But look how much I gained
If I have to
I can face anything
I am strong (strong)
I am invincible (invincible)
I am woman
I am woman watch me grow
See me standing toe to toe
As I spread my lovin' arms across the land
But I'm still an embryo
With a long, long way to go
Until I make my brother understand...

(3,469 posts)It was considered kind of scandalous at the time. I was too young to know what "the pill" was and why there was an uproar over it. My mom and her friends liked the song. My parents got into an argument over it. My mom said if my sisters and I ever came to her and wanted to go on the pill she would let us. Dad said "over my dead body" and she said "if that's what it takes, ok."
I love your Mom's attitude.

(27,995 posts)She talked about her life leading up to the song being written and then all of the backlash when it came out - it was so brave! And those lyrics are great!

(27,995 posts)But "I Am Woman" reminds me of my senior year in high school, driving and singing at the top of my lungs along with Helen Reddy. It was an anthem for women of my generation.

We can't let them silence us again... Sandra Fluke came to represent every one's daughter or sister..She is my hero.
March 8th. is 'International Women's Day' :
"a day when women are recognized for their achievements without regard to divisions, whether national, ethnic, linguistic, cultural, economic or political. It is an occasion for looking back on past struggles and accomplishments, and more importantly, for looking ahead to the untapped potential and opportunities that await future generations of women."

OK that marriage ended in divorce but she's been married to #2 husband for close to 40 years.
That song was part of growing up for lots of us.
