I saw a commercial last night advertising a new mobile home for the low, low price of $57,800.
Does a new trailer really cost that much? I can't imagine.
Maybe I'm oblivious, but I would have thought that you could have bought a small, brick home for that amount, around here in central Alabama.

(38,958 posts)you can pay as much as you want to. That said there are certainly dealers in your area and they can be found with a quick online search.
When we were first looking several years ago you could get one pretty decently priced. Then after Katrina, for some reason the prices shot up and we were looking at prices way out of our range. We ended up buying a forclosed doublewide for $15k because they hadn't done any work yet. So in order to save $15k (they would have charged $30 after they cleaned it up) we got to clean it out. And that included the stuff they took out of the fridge and left on the counter when they took the appliances as well as a lot of garbage, clothes etc.

(17,865 posts)a very expensive diesel engine and drive train which a trailer does not have. How much is the pick up to pull a comparably sized trailer?
Still it is breathtaking that individuals can afford both a home and a trailer. These are usually ones with a three legged stool (good company pension, Social Security, and a nice 401k). These folks are also the ones always excluded from discussions about "Social Security reform". My Representative had a budget panel in which we made suggestions about dealing with the budget. One group of retirees thought it was funny that one of their suggestions was pushing future retirees benefits off. I thought and almost said, "Damn it you paid a fall smaller percentage of your income into S.S. you voted for this situation, and you don't have any skin in the game". Also most had much better company pensions than exist now. Thought about the Winnebagos rolling out of Forrest City and the mindless gamblers I have seen at the casinoes. Thought about the low tuition rates their kids had compared to what my kids face.
Yes very funny.

(17,865 posts)My house could be considered a mobile home. It was made in a factory and shipped in pieces. It is a good home, but they used double hung windows turned sideways. Not a good idea. My home inspector missed that fact.

(60,339 posts)We purchased one when we were first married because we wanted out of the 2 room appartment we lived in, the cost was $12K in 1985. We sold it 4 years later for about the same price to buy our first house, which was only $45K at the time for 3 bedroom ranch.
Compare that to what the price of cars have done and it is probably about right. Nothing is affordable anymore.

(14,804 posts)It takes sixty thousand fucking dollars to buy a fucking trailer!
Plus more money to buy a sorry piece of ground on which to park it.
More money to install sewage and electrical.
Where are people without a hundred grand supposed to live?

(23,664 posts)And we have a shitload of them here in our little county. Some of them have most of the bells and whistles of a stick built house, but they are not built to the same rigid code requirements.
They are prefabricated in a factory and hauled to the building site in two or three pieces, where they are assembled and placed on a foundation.
I know it sounds like a lot of money but it's still cheaper to buy one of these things and plunk it down on your lot than to build a conventional home on site.
However, it's a goddamn good thing we rarely see a tornado around here or an awful lot of these things would be flying around the sky. They're sturdier than they used to be but still pretty flimsy.

Plenty of brick houses were destroyed on April 27, 2011, in Tuscaloosa.
I'm just saying people need housing. That's all.

(4,205 posts)In 2005 we bought a manufactured(this is what they are called now)home for just under $70,000, including setup, it has oak faced cabinets, rounded corners all windows have normal sills, fully carpeted with a decent grade, good linoleum.it is 1600 square feet, 3 bedroom 2 bath, original price was at about $66,000 but we di a few upgrades, i cost me less than a thousand to set the slab up for it. Some costs are dependent on where you live, I am in Oregon so no special requirements for earthquake or tornado protections.
On edit: I was a carpenter and contractor for almost 50 years and I could not build one of equal quality for that price.
