(13,485 posts)condemnation and a statement of support. "Broad-brush condemnation"? You have to be kidding; your's was the only broad-brush and you're painting the wrong house as well.

(13,485 posts)"Hope" does not equal "require". You personalize the comment as if there is no one else here but you. It's not about you if you decide it's not. If you want to tell us about your experience, fine. If you want to invalidate a supportive comment because you have a personal issue.... think a bit more.

The point is over there, in case you missed it.

(8,267 posts)The sound of resentful, defensive men missing the point...
(If "vast numbers of men" felt this way, rape, sexual assault and relationship violence would be rare and remarkable!)
whopis01
(3,523 posts)it would end male violence against women.
Stating that ALL men should watch and listen to that message is not a condemnation of ALL men. As you point out further down in the thread, you and others in your family already do listen (and promote) that message. But until ALL men do the violence against women won't end.
DavidDvorkin
(19,489 posts)By your logic, all women should watch videos lecturing women not to murder their babies.
whopis01
(3,523 posts)To begin with, why are you talking about videos and lectures? There was no video or lectured posted or talked about - at least not that I saw.
There was the comment made by another poster saying "I hope ALL men are listening and watching". Clearly (as there is no video to watch or lecture to listen to) this is referring to the message being delivered and not a particular medium such as a video or lecture.
So if you would just relax the rules of literalness a little, I think it is easy to interpret that statement as "I hope ALL men understand this".
My point is that you interpreted it as a condemnation against all men - including those who would neither be violent towards women nor condone such violence - I don't believe it was meant as such, nor did I read it as such.

(37,748 posts)Much as the warning signs at public swimming pools are applicable to all want to go for a nice, relaxing swim...
Some already know the safety precautions, others may not-- but rare is the sign I see that prefaces itself with "if you're an experienced swimmer, practice common sense behavior and maintain this throughout your visit here, you may disregard the following..."
DavidDvorkin
(19,489 posts)Having the signs at swimming pools is the practical way to do it.
A situation comparable to the one we're discussing here would be if someone held a sign at a street corner encouraging safe swimming practices and a DU poster said that all people, swimmers or not, should read that sign and follow its urgings.

(1,309 posts)Why is it older women are always carrying the load? Look around. They stand up for men in everyway possible. Lets stand with them and volunteer.
By the way I am an old white guy from the south, a combat veteran, a federal Government retiree, a supporter of Union Rights, a supporter of Obamacare and a path to single payer, a believer in keynesiamn economics, one who disdains the neoliberals as not real democrats, a believer in framing and any other legal technique we can use to get our message out to help the people.
Let us help these women.

(15,373 posts)Had a less pleasant experience the first time around, although to be fair, I believe that we were both too young and immature. It wasn't that he was not a good person and we did have two sons together, who both seem to have turned out fine, i.e., they are both staunch Dems. LOL Their dad and I were just not a good fit, although we were together for 13 years.
I was not looking to remarry at all, but serendipity and a lot of fervent match-making by mutual acquaintances brought the two of us together after I had been a single parent for three years (he had been one for seven, sharing custody). It was also the second time around for him. One of the earliest and kindest lessons that I learned from him is that one can not only survive a divorce, but one can also remain on good terms with an ex, which is especially important when children are involved. Of course, that implies rational adults on all sides, which is too often not the case, unfortunately, given the nature of divorce.
But he really is something special.

(8,267 posts)My 'picker' is broken. As a survivor of childhood sexual abuse, date rape, and an alcoholic, abusive father, I've apparently not learned to discern when a man is a pathological liar (or a sociopath, or an ODD...)
I am in the Crone stage of my life, and enjoying my solitude. However, if someone like Patrick dropped in my lap, I'd be all over him!

(15,373 posts)You must be a very strong person to have survived so much. Stay strong and believe in yourself!
There is nothing at all wrong with solitude. Many actively choose it and are very happy with that choice.
